New Year, New You

A new year is a fresh start.

It’s a chance to re-evaluate. To decide what did and didn’t work last year and find new ways to be your best self.

You know, the version of yourself that you love the most. The version of yourself that makes you feel like you’re on top of the world, that allows everything to align in your favor and makes spreading love so easy.

A fresh year is the perfect time to reevaluate and determine how you can get to being that person.

And while you don’t have to wait until the new year to decide to be your best self, or your happiest… it is a great time to reflect.

Will losing weight make you feel fabulous? Is it committing to living more creatively that will have you smiling more? Is it the simple promise to love yourself that will make you shine?

Think about what will make you feel amazing and then take the time to write it all down. That’s the first step.

Then start planning. How can you get there? What were you doing the year before that just wasn’t working for you? How can you modify (or even get rid of) those habits so that they can serve you?

Making a plan for success is so instrumental in achieving this. It doesn’t have to be a massive undertaking; start small so it feels attainable. Find something you can do every day that makes you feel better and commit to doing it. Then, once you have that under your belt, add in the next phase of your plan. Keep going until you hit your goal.

Remember: this doesn’t have to be your standard New Year’s resolution. It’s a chance for a fresh start. Embrace it and leave your mistakes, your self-doubt, your distractions in the past. It’s amazing the amount of change a year can bring. Believe in yourself. This year is going to be YOUR year.

Yoga for weight loss

Yoga is beautiful practice with many benefits. Especially if you practice regularly. More than just stretching and relaxation, it can also be a great way to manage your weight. Not only does yoga build muscle (which is important in speeding up your metabolism), it can raise your heart rate and decrease stress.

If you’re looking to add “weight loss” to your personal list of yoga benefits, try Vinyasa Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Hatha Yoga or Forrest Yoga. These styles go above and beyond simple stretching and meditation, incorporating strength-boosting poses, faster transitions between poses (hello higher heart rate!) and a ton of core work.

Of course, it’s important to find the style that feels right for you. Weight loss is different for every body and the most important part of achieving your weight goal is to make sure it’s done in a way that supports your body and is something you can commit to doing regularly. If Vinyasa Yoga totally exhausts and depletes you, it won’t be beneficial for weight loss over the long term as you will likely rest more between classes and maybe turn to comforting snacks more often. Find what makes you feel powerful, beautiful and strong and your body will quickly follow suit. Check out local studios, online videos or even our Facebook group for different styles of yoga until you find the one that works for you.

And keep it consistent! A daily yoga practice is SO beneficial for mental, emotional and physical health. Even if it’s a quick 10 minutes between appointments or a handful of invigorating poses before your morning coffee, your body will thank you. 5 Healthy, tropical snack ideas

You’re home from vacation and already missing the beach, the palm trees and all those yummy tropical eats. Don’t worry – we’re here to help you bring a little bit of that sunshine back onto your plate. Here are 5 healthy, tropical snack ideas to keep the vacation vibes going…

1. Guacamole

What is more delicious than guacamole?! Seriously. It’s creamy, savory, smooth and so, so yummy. Plus it’s packed full of healthy fats and nutrients. To keep your guacamole natural and tropical, try to use whole ingredients (no pre-mixes, please!) such as avocados, lemons, onion, fresh cilantro, chilis (if you like to keep things spicy) and sea salt. This delicious dip can be paired with tortilla chips, fresh cut veggies or even as a topper for tacos. Yum!

2. Fruit smoothie

The best way to get a taste the beach, the palm trees, and that warm breeze is in a tropical smoothie. Nothing is more tropical than a fruity mix of the best Mother Nature has to offer. Blend pineapple, mango, starfruit, banana, papaya, passion fruit, orange or any of your other favorite tropical fruits with coconut water and a little bit of ice and you’ll be instantly transported back into your favorite lounge chair at the beach.

3. Energy bites

A quick and easy pick-me-up for those long afternoons that will fill you with energy and make your taste buds swoon. All you need to do is mix together your favorite nuts, dried fruit and spices in a food processor, pack them into little balls and snack away! 4. Summer rolls

So fresh and so good. Summer rolls are crisp, crunchy, and packed full of nutritious fruit and vegetables. They are the perfect light and healthy snack for any time of day. Plus, they are super easy to make and are incredibly versatile. You can make these with any of your favorite produce – raw or cooked. To keep with our tropical vibe, we recommend adding fresh mango, avocado, cilantro, and a little lime juice. Your taste buds will thank you!

5. Fruit and cheese plate

We love a good fruit and cheese plate because it’s filling and fun. Tap into your creative side as you play with the combinations on your plate to hit the spot. Whether that be fresh baked bread, a tropical fruit mix, vegan or creamy cheese or whole grain crackers, the beauty is that it’s all up to you. Why should you go to a YTT?

Ok, you’ve got the regular yoga practice, the daily meditation and you’ve been doing yoga for the past 5 years… it’s time to take it to the next level and start teaching yoga, right?

Guest Yoga Teacher Colynn Vosburgh, 500hr ERYT

Colynn Vosburgh brings her West Coast teaching style and life experiences from British Columbia, Canada. After practicing yoga and nursing for over 14 years, Colynn decided to create a massive change and began attending Medical School as well as took her 200hr Yoga Teacher Training. As it is known to do, YTT changed Colynn’s mind on the direction in life she was going. Within 2 years, Colynn quit med-school and nursing & decided to pursue a career in coaching through Yoga & Meditation. Colynn’s western clinical fusion and knowledge of anatomy, physiology and disease process coupled with eastern philosophies makes her classes original and life changing, both mentally and physically.

Colynn truly believes that the world we are operating in is hazardous to our health and wellness. She teaches a supportive class that allows her students to connect to the present moment and take the time to let go of some of the stresses constantly plaguing each person. Regardless of the style of teaching, Colynn promises to deliver a class in which you connect deeper to your true-self, you discharge your nervous system, and you focus on your breath as a tool. In the world we live in today, our nervous systems are always on. Our ancient bodies are engulfed in modern stresses and it is affecting our overall health. Join me for a discussion about the nervous system and learn tools to release the constant pressure we put on ourselves and our bodies, and how to integrate them into your daily life. You will then experience a 1.5hr class in which you will totally discharge your nervous system and find complete relaxation. Price is $30.

Past Life Regression

In Yogic tradition, the atman, or true-self, is unharmed in death and continues to reincarnate into physical bodies through the passage of time. Each life has a lesson associated with it and the lesson continues to repeat until it is learned. Each life teaching something different, something more, to support you on your continued journey. Allow me to guide you back through 2 past lives so that those lessons can be sprinkled into your present life. This class is 1.5 – 2 hours depending on how many people attend. Price is $25.

Guest Teacher Lori McKee

Lori has been an athlete all her life and especially loves golf.  She was introduced to yoga in 2011 and after much encouragement to keep practicing, she fell in love with it.  So much so that she received her 200 Hour Hot Yoga Teacher Certification in 2016.  She also went to Inferno Hot Pilates training in 2017.

Lori moved back to her hometown in Ohio after being away for over 30 years to help Charlene manage her yoga studio.  Lori is a vital part to the daily operation of Hot Yoga Escape as the Studio Manager and teacher on staff.

Lori’s Teaching Philosophy

Lori’s philosophy on teaching, whether it be yoga or Inferno Hot Pilates   is “everyday is a different day on your mat, and everyday is a greatday on your mat”. She encourages her students to do what is right for them.  Lori teaches her classes to all levels and is always mindful to give attentive direction to those less experienced.  She wants all of her students to understand how they can receive the maximum benefit from each posture.  You will have fun with Lori’s sense of humor and kind hearted spirit as she guides you further on your journey on your mat!

Charlene is a passionate yogi, nurturer and believes living life to it’s fullest.  She found her way to her mat and started a serious yoga practice in early 2011.  She was seeking for more than just a physical workout.  She needed something to quiet her mind and ground her inner self during a challenging time in her life.  Her healing and positive experience motivated her to go to teacher training so she could share the beauty and benefits of yoga with others.

Charlene has her hot yoga certification from Bikram’s Yoga College of India (500 plus Hour) in 2014.  She completed trainings in Yin yoga 2016 and Inferno Hot Pilates 2017.  She has deepened her yoga knowledge and insights further with a transformational and empowering 200 Hour Yoga Alliance Certified Teacher Training in Spring 2018.  She moved back to her hometown in Ohio and opened a yoga studio called Hot Yoga Escape in 2016.

Charlene’s Teaching Philosophy

Charlene believes that “only you can take care of you”.  Every time you come to your mat, it’s a big deal. She teaches a challenging yet nurturing class. She feels that each person that tries his/ her best will receive exactly what is needed for healing his/ her mind, body and spirit.  She encourages her students to be mindful of breath as well as alignment and not so much about depth.  Breath is your “life force” aka “energy” and depth comes in time with practice.

Charlene will teach the original hot yoga, a Hatha based series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises and a Vinyasa Flow class where focus is on movement with your breath. The hot yoga series and Vinyasa Flow will alternate in the mornings during your retreat. These classes will definitely have energy in the air and offer you the perfect start to lovely day at Anamaya.

Charlene will also teach Yin yoga in the afternoons.  Yin yoga is a gentler yoga and the pleasing complement to the “yang” of the more physical yoga or exercise you do in your life.  Props will be available for use and Charlene will guide you into each posture with loving care.  You may feel like you took a long, rejuvenating nap after class.

All classes are available to all levels and no experience is necessary. Charlene has found that some yogis prefer some one on one time to work on specific postures.  She will be available for private instruction throughout the week, if requested.

Guest Teacher Erica Cohen

With a strong belief in alternative healing practices, Erica focuses on enhancing the lives of her students through yoga. As a passionate teacher, as well as student, she is dedicated to learning; from her students and for her students.

Erica is a New Jersey native, who has found her home here in Montezuma. She spent many years in the real estate industry, assisting her clients in the purchase and sale of their homes. Yoga has played a major role in her life, keeping her grounded through the hustle and bustle of NJ/NYC, and always connecting her back “home” to herself.

Her dedication to this ancient practice brought her to Anamaya in 2015, where she trained with Paula Tursi. Her studies, strongly based on the trinity of body, mind, and spirit, awoken a strong desire to share this practice with others, and she has since moved to the Montezuma to do just that.

From the very start, Erica has had the pleasure of working with some of the most experienced, dedicated teachers. Beyond her 200 hour teacher training with Paula, Erica also studied with Banyan Gallagher, who passes the tradition of T. Krishnamacharya forward, prescribing different yogas for different individuals.

She also studied the healing art of Thai Yoga massage with T’ai Jamar Hanna which has enhanced her teaching and enabled her to bring dynamic adjustments and energy work into the class.

Teaching Philosophy

Erica’s teachings are from the heart. She encourages students to tune into their bodies, making each class a time to notice, connect, release, and recharge. She teaches a well-rounded class that includes asana, meditation, and pranayama. The morning classes are strong, vinyasa flow classes with a focus on moving meditation, and the evening classes are gentle and restorative. Her intention is for students to leave class feeling a greater connection to themselves and the universe around them. Erica’s classes are accessible and inviting to all levels of students.

Erica has both the patience to cater to beginners, as well as the knowledge to provide insight to the veteran yogis. She brings an amazing energy to the class and keeps things flowing naturally. Unlike other classes I’ve attended, Erica actually walks around the room paying attention and giving pointers to each and every student. I highly recommend her class to both newcomers and those already experienced.


During this week, we will be offering a meditation workshop focused on returning back to our natural state. We will discuss our obstacles with meditation, how we can work with those obstacles, and ways in which we can calm the fluctuations of the mind. Workshop is 1 hour, and price is $30.

Guest Yoga Teacher Abbé Ciulla

Abbé Ciulla is the yogi behind and co-founder of The Adventure Awaits yoga immersion programs and retreats. She has been practicing holistic healing, bodybuilding and integrative nutrition for over a decade and has been nominated Best Yoga Teacher by Mercury Magazine.

With gratitude, Abbe leads a heart centered practice on and off the mat. Her days are filled sharing her signature “Vitality” yoga classes, as well as teacher trainings and biomechanics workshops. Her devoted students travel to practice with her on spiritually immersive yoga retreats all over the globe.

When Abbe isn’t teaching, trekking or balancing on her hands, she spends her days working at family owned garden center where she is surrounded by nature and motivated by growth and transformation. Drawing on her love for the natural world, her devotion of the practice and her wanderess soul she now travels that passion across the world to teach amongst nature’s wild canvas.

Mind, Body, Soul

Yoga means union, aiming to connect the intricate facets of our human condition harmoniously – from the physical and sensory, the emotional and mental, and the spiritual and highest Self-realization.

This workshop series is designed to do just that; To align our three major dimensions: Mind, Body & Soul. Find equanimity in these three pillars. Witness how honoring all equally can lead to transformation and conscious living. Each individual workshop is $40, or $100 for all three.

Part One: The Soul

Break Up, Break Through: A Workshop on Breaking Boundaries

Building a yoga practice balanced in strength and flexibility means we must dig deep & search for any missing pieces. Most often we don’t need to look far as we are not lost, maybe just wandering a little off track. Break up with bad habit, break through boundaries and self-limiting behavior.

In this workshop we will learn how to truly develop a balanced practice. If you feel weakness you will learn how to cultivate strength. If you feel inflexible you will learn how to encourage mobility.
Here we will uncover the simple tricks to help us discover the path to breakthrough. We will discuss the most common yoga setbacks- mental-blocks, injuries & immobilities, and how to honor them so that we get the most out of our practice.

Bring your aspirational or most challenging asana and hop into the hot seat to examine how your pose reflects your habits, your posture reveals your patterns and how to determine your specific course of action.

Part asana lab, part personal exploration. Each participant will receive some one-on-one coaching from Abbe to meet individual goals. Workshop Length: 150 minutes

Part Two: The Mind

Body, Emotion, Fellowship: A Human Yoga Intensive

What are the physical manifestations of human emotion? How does the body react to loss, pain, or joy? Why do we give power to these emotions?

Uncover the importance of community and fellowship. Take your practice to a new level by learning to embody yogic principles that lead to conscious living and transformation. We have been collecting and refining our tools of practice, now it’s time to learn how to use them to heal the mind instead of only the physical body.

Join Abbé as she dives into the layers of what we take on every time we hit our mat.

Workshop is available to anyone with an existing yoga practice and a desire to examine the human experience. Workshop length: 120 minutes

Part Three: The Body

The Fundamentals of Flight: An arm balance and inversion workshop

Not only are arm-balances and inversions fun transitional tools to add to your practice toolkit, they are also important to finding a balanced asana practice. They challenge us mentally and physically by forcing us to slow down, find strength, courage and trust.

During this all level workshop we will build the basic framework for safe and sustainable inversions, specifically working with the anatomy and alignment in the shoulder girdle, core and bandhas. While exploring these elusive arm-balances we will focus on proper alignment and bone-stacking, training techniques and exercise drills to strengthen and open your body for inversion practice.

Each participant will receive some one-on-one coaching from Abbe to meet individual needs. Workshop Length: 150 minutes. Workshop is open to all levels of practice. Bring an adventurous spirit and a willingness to learn.

Guest Yoga Teacher Cassandra Wilder N.D.

Cassandra Wilder is a Naturopathic Doctor, Herbalist and Retreat Leader that shares her wisdom of yoga, the Sacred Feminine and natural health all across the world. Passionate about women’s wisdom and yoga therapy, Cassandra leads Goddess Retreats across the United States and worldwide, inspiring and empowering people to live authentic, vibrant lives. She is honored to be teaching here at Anamaya Resort and to be a part of your beautiful experience here in Costa Rica.

Cassandra grew up in a small town in Utah and from a young age had an interest in natural health, the body and healing. By the age of 13, she had proclaimed to her family that she wanted to be a Naturopathic Doctor when she grew up and help men and women find wellness and balance. By 19, she had completed her first Yoga Teacher Training and began her studies at the University of Utah.

Before long, Cassandra found herself working a stressful corporate job as she tried to navigate through the steps to success she had been taught. She had a decent job, was about to graduate with her bachelors degree, had a nice apartment and lived in a beautiful city, and yet she felt emptiness.

After a relationship ending in a police report and court rooms, Cassandra found herself at her rock bottom. She knew she had two options: she could either stay disempowered and exhausted in her life or, she could begin to change her life and discover who she truly was.

Fortunately, she chose to change.

Immersing herself in yoga, mindfulness and meditation, Cassandra began to feel the light and joy within her return. Little by little, she began to heal herself.

About 6 months later, Cassandra felt called to visit Costa Rica to continue her healing journey and after a few months of resistance, she finally booked a yoga retreat at one of the most beautiful yoga retreat centers in the world – Anamaya Resort.

Throughout her week at Anamaya she began to feel a sense of empowerment and happiness she had never felt before. Spending a week at Anamaya gave Cassandra the support and nourishment she needed to begin to radically change her life.

Soon, she sold everything she owned, quit her corporate job, moved out of her apartment and left to travel the world with her partner Joseph. Exploring Central America, Southeast Asia and the Western United States, she began to discover her purpose and passion in this world.

After spending a few months in Guatemala, Cassandra began leading sacred women’s circles
around the world and later began leading them in Michigan where she was going to school. These circles later expanded into yoga retreats all across the United States and worldwide, providing hundreds of people with a safe and empowering space to heal, rejuvenate and grow. After finishing her schooling as a Naturopathic Doctor, Cassandra began to weave into her teachings the wisdom of health and wellness as well.

Known for her down to earth attitude and warmth, Cassandra holds a loving and supportive space to all who meet her. She is beyond honored to be teaching at this week long retreat in November and cannot wait to be a part of your journey!

Guest Teacher JIVANA

JIVANA (Janine Jordan) is a multi-dimensional being, playful spiritual artivist (art activist) and tantrika-yogini. JIVANA considers art a spiritual path, which includes of course, the art of yoga. With the idea that “I am Art”, JIVANA as an avant-garde yogini applies her philosophy of karma yoga to artivism and in addition to spiritual service to the world through embodiment, art, and action. She grew up in Southern California, and was always involved in some sort of dance or physical-art-movement. She graduated from the business school at the University of San Diego in 2002 and then moved to Hollywood.

She has been running a holistic environmental awareness non-profit for over a decade which includes several projects in the Southern Nicoya Peninsula: Futuro Verde environmental school, Karen Mogensen Reserve in Jicaral, Wild Sun wildlife rescue and release center, and now the Green Wave environmental show home. Interestingly, she attributes finding her yogic path and being empowered to start and continue her non-profit work to an art project she started in 2004 that revolves around the superheroine character and muse, Raver J. JIVANA uses writing, dance-performance art, digital media, and collaborations with artists to raise awareness about important issues, inspire people to feel empowered, and act selflessly to change the world.

JIVANA moved to Costa Rica with her husband two years ago and have built an eco-show home and mini-permacultural farm in Anamaya’s supporting eco-village, Rancho Delicioso. They occasionally travel to festivals and conferences to speak about their experiences.

JIVANA likes to share the path of the spiritual artivist and show people how they can tap into their inner superhero/ine. Through her upcoming fictional autobiography, JIVANA is pioneering rave culture literature, and hopes to inspire and continue to build a global community of artivists – peaceful, playful, poignant, warriors of the rainbow dedicated to transforming the world.

Teaching Philosophy

Through her karma yoga work, JIVANA is a living example and inspiratrix for others to lead a more conscious, intentional, beautiful, and blissful existence while balancing the call to help save the planet in their own unique and creative way. Her teaching is heart-centered, Earth connected and reverent. She will make you a superhero/ine. Her flows are slow-flow vinyasa based with kundalini breath work. The morning classes are strong but good for all levels. Her evening classes are gentle and creative. She teaches about self-love, gratitude, embodiment, and “off the mat” action through her asana classes, workshops, and private consultations. Her classes have been influenced by her teachers. JIVANA has studied with Ana Costa (San Diego of Anahata Heart Yoga), Psalm Isadora (LA, Tantra yoga), Peter Kaaberbol (Anamaya), and the extensive readings from John Lamb Lash (Gaian Tantra), Guru Rattana (Kundalini teacher of Yoga Technology) and Paramahansa Yogananda (Self-Realization Fellowship).
