Guest Yoga Teacher Harumi Maejima

C-IAYT, E-500 RYT, YACEP

Harumi Maejima is owner and director of HarumiYoga+ Holistic Healing House in Scottsdale, AZ. Harumi discovered the benefits of Yoga when combating the mental and physical fatigue of her demanding work at a Japanese diplomatic office in the US. Her physical practice of yoga soon led to further inquiry into yoga’s mental and spiritual applications. This wider view of yoga addressed the “whole person”, that of the relationship between body, mind and spirit which sparked her decision to pursue training as an instructor.

She succeeded in attaining the highest proficiency level granted by the Yoga Alliance, E-500 RYT (Experienced Register Yoga Teacher, teaching hours more than 5,000 hours). Harumi then obtained the C-IAYT followed by advanced training with a Therapeutic Life Mentor certificate in 2016. Harumi founded unique HarumiYoga+ Holistic Healing House in 2009 in North Scottsdale.

Teaching Philosophy

Harumi utilizes her intensive studies from the different traditions of Kripalu School of Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Prana Flow, Yin Yoga and various styles of Meditation. Harumi combined these with knowledge accumulated from world-wide participation and professional training into her classes. She has studied meditation with Thich Nhat Hanh, Bhante Sujatha, Roshi Joan Halifax and Sensei Jokai Blackwell, and traveled to many temples and monasteries in Asia and US. Harumi’s teaching philosophy and holistic viewpoint evolved into body-mind connection, the cornerstone of her mission to inspire students to promote healthy living.

Julie’s Philosophy

Julie teaches yoga with passion and enthusiasm. Her playful and creative vinyasa flows keep the students present and engaged. She weaves in a spiritual message to her classes to get her students to think and reflect. She encourages her students to become aware of their habitual behavioral patterns by studying their physical asana practice. This self-study helps them to go inward in order to grow and blossom spiritually. Also, she inspires students to start new habits or rituals to nurture discipline in their lives. She believes the combination of discipline and self-reflection can lead to growth, clarity, transformation, and healing. Her intention is to be of service to others and to guide these students to growth and transformation. Her favorite quote by Carl Jung, “He who looks outside, dreams; he who looks inside, awakens”.

Yoga Retreats with Sarita Lou

PACKAGES:  We have a number of Yoga Retreats and packages we offer our guests. Try the Yoga & Adventure, Yoga & Rejuvenation, Yoga & Surfing, or the Pure Yoga package. We call it the Relaxation Retreat.

We are also now offering a Scuba Certification and Yoga package to our guests.

WORKSHOPS: We’re excited to offer our guests a very special workshop series called Embody Your Anatomy. Please see below for more details.

Guest Teacher Sarita Lou

Sarita’s yoga practice is concerned with cultivating equanimity in the body and mind. She is a firm believer in the body’s innate wisdom and tends to offer a fiery flow, which softens internal dialogue and allows the body to take the lead. Based on the intuitive knowledge of the body, her classes are crafted to increase confidence and self-belief in the practitioner. Every practice offers several minutes of self-practice in which the student leads themselves through asana, therefore claiming the practice for themselves and hopefully, listening to their bodies particular wants and needs.

Sarita’s teaching philosophy is based on listening. As a teacher she “listens” using all her senses, intuitively crafting a practice for her students. In this space of deep listening you, the student, are compelled to listen to yourself. You are more able to notice repetitive thoughts, habits and patterns. Cultivating this type of deep listening also allows us to respond to our bodies impulses – leading to a deeper connection to self, and encouraging deep listening in other aspects of our lives.

Yoga is just one of Sarita’s passions, the other being dance. Sarita was based in New York for seven years, working as a B’way choreographer and creative movement teacher. She is currently deepening her understanding of the body and her own creative practice by attending Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London.

Workshops

Embody Your Anatomy

Investigating the structural realities of the physical body, leading to greater freedom and fluidity in everyday movements!

Great for advanced practitioners, yoga teachers or anyone curious about fundamental truths of our anatomy, this workshop series will help answer the mysterious questions that the body often brings up. Such as – what is the relationship between the eyes and the hips? Or – why can focusing on one part of the body bring relief to another?

This joyful investigation will borrow concepts from dance somatic therapies and the long lineage of teachers dedicated to creating more ease and freedom in the body. Through movement, visualization and partner work we will increase our understanding of what the body is doing and supporting us in doing. Most students that have taken this workshop experience sensations such as lightness and spaciousness – specifically in the hips.

Being offered over the course of three afternoons Embody Your Anatomy is an opportunity to dive deep into the poetic truths that help us move with more sensitivity and awareness. This work offers those with deep anatomical knowledge a way of experiencing their anatomy, versus academically understanding it. To celebrate a newfound relationship to our boney structure the final workshop will culminate in a dance party in which our bones will sing!

***Each workshop is 90 min. $40 each. Package Price is $108.

WORKSHOPS: We’re excited to offer our guests an Acro Yoga Workshop this week.

Guest Yoga Teacher Banyan Gallagher

Banyan Yoga Teacher - Thumb 200pxBanyan Gallagher has over twenty years experience as an international athlete, circus performer, and yoga teacher. Banyan is an expert at unraveling the beauty—and barriers—hidden within the body.

A passionate teacher and dedicated student, Banyan is the Founder and Director of Warrior 1 Yoga and leads retreats, workshops, and teacher trainings worldwide. With integrity and trust, he challenges his students on levels physical, mental, and energetic. This approach is well balanced by a caring and jovial attitude that demonstrates his love of life and commitment to his students. Never afraid to have a laugh, Banyan is a warm, playful soul whose presence offers genuine calm to all those around him.

From the very start, Banyan has had the pleasure of working with some of the world’s most renowned teachers, from Tias Little to Andrey Lappa, Shiva Rea to Ana Forrest, Eddie Modestini to Nicki Doane, Jim Bennitt to Rod Stryker and T.K.V. Desikachar. To continually deepen his practice and breadth of knowledge, Banyan intensely studies everything from Sufi mystical poetry to human dissection and anatomy. He has spent the bulk of the last ten years traveling the world and learning from a variety of masters both East and West.

Banyan passes the tradition of T. Krishnamacharya forward, prescribing different yogas for different individuals. His multidisciplinary and global studies have facilitated this process well. In his classes, he blends traditional teachings with modern analogies in the interest of giving the Western practitioner direction, stillness, and balance—and maybe a laugh here and there!

Teaching Philosophy

“Sincerity is more important than seriousness”

At the heart of Banyan’s teachings is the sense that life, and therefore practice, is meant to be enjoyed. This “play,” or leela in Sanskrit, is a fundamental part of our existence, and yet a part of us that we often forget. What this means is that although practicing with Banyan can be challenging and push you to the edge of your capabilities, he is always ready with a smile and a reminder of what’s important.

“Being open is more important than being flexible”

And what’s important? Not your flexibility. Not your strength. Not your age or the number of your Instagram followers. What’s important is that you’re open to change, open to growth, open to seeing yourself in a more powerful light.

Banyan’s background is diverse, even from a yoga standpoint. He learned the Iyengar and Ashtanga systems from Eddie Modestini and Nicki Doane. He studied at length under Andrey Lappa, Ana Forrest, Tias Little, Seane Corne, Shiva Rea, and many more. He is now a student of Rod Stryker from the Tantric lineage.

What this means is that a session with Banyan is non-dogmatic. Interdisciplinary. Diverse.

Banyan seeks to discover each individual’s needs and employ whatever methodology would most suit these needs. Some yogis need more stillness in their lives; others just need to dance.

“There is no one-size-fits-all yoga”

Workshops

AcroYoga: The Power of Play

AcroYoga developed as a synthesis of yoga-asana, partner-acrobatics, and thai massage, and has grown into so much more. These days AcroYoga is being shared worldwide through a friendly network of people who see play as a fundamental part of life.

AcroYoga has made me a better listener, a better friend, and a better husband. What I learn in my AcroYoga practice translates immediately into the rest of my life.” – Banyan

In this introductory-level workshop we will create a safe container for the practice as a whole. We will talk as a group about fears, about trust, and about fun. Group and partner exercises will be introduced with a focus on communication, listening skills, and safety. For those who are ready, more advanced variations and options are offered.

Laughter will ensue.

(No partner required)

AcroYoga: The Power of Trust

In this level II workshop, we will build on the fundamentals of the prior session and go a step further. In order to take that step, our trust in one another is key. Therefore we’ll ask: what is it that allows us to trust? What is it that points us towards fear? How can we communicate our integrity to one another? Can we trust others to protect us?

Again, group, trio, and partner exercises will invite further exploration. We will take some of the postures and flows from the first session and build upon them. As always, communication and safety will be the basis for all exploration.

(No partner required)

While you are welcome to sign up for each session individually, we strongly suggest joining us for both workshops. With repetition and familiarity, the whole group is bound to have a lot more fun! Each workshop is 2 hours each, $40 for one or $70 for both.

Guest Yoga Teacher Ashleigh Abramovich

ASHLEIGH BRINGS YOU A PRACTICE THAT IS A SPECTACULAR EXPERIENCE OF YOGA, MEDITATION AND PLAY.

Ashleigh has practiced yoga for 17 years and lived in San Luis Obispo, San Francisco, Dallas, Los Angeles and currently resides in New York City. In each city, yoga and meditation has been the golden thread she has connected to.  She is attracted to yoga because it has inspired her to find balance, joy and new ways to move through her life on and off the mat. In yoga you are always good enough and you have everything you need inside of you.

Ashleigh has experienced a lot of healing and transformation to become ready to work with others and share this practice. She considers herself a forever a student. Once she began to teach from a place of love and service she found gratitude and discovered a joy and connection to the practice in an even deeper way. When she is with her students, her main focus is NOW. By being with each other and listening by looking and experiencing what is wanted and needed, she tunes into each moment to share intuitively and presently with the class.

As someone who struggled with being disconnected to her body through her teens and young adult life she was constantly seeking outside of herself grasping to find relief from the frustration of never feeling at peace or at ease in her body. A lot of the fun she was having was short lived and not long lasting. No matter how much she had or what goals were accomplished that connection she sought didn’t appear.

She began a process of recovery out of complete emotional exhaustion after graduating art school and working in the Visual Effects Industry for a couple of years. The rate at which she was living (fast) and the relationship she had to her body (reckless) had taken its toll on her. She sought a spiritual connection and a solution to heal.

She started to meditate and she had many gracious teachers who practiced with her one on one, holding space for her until she was able to hold that space for herself. Ashleigh’s philosophy is to share her experience passionately and authentically. There is a saying you cannot give away what you do not have. Her love of yoga starts with self love, growth and integrity within herself.

Ashleigh aims to share lightness, there to serve as a gentle reminder of what people carry inside of them. There is an ease and awareness we all have accessible to us and it often doesn’t look like we thought it had to.

Ashleigh’s aim is to help guide others to connect and find freedom and relief from stress, anxiety, stiffness and pain. She creates a relaxed and flowing environment which helps to create space and get grounded through a moving meditation. She has been practicing meditation for 8 years with teachers such as Michael Taft & Jessica Graham, and joyfully weaves this into her classes, aiming to guide people to connect to themselves and transform.

Ashleigh will guide you into classes that create a flow state designed to tap you into your creative intuition. This leaves you energized, elevated and at ease. It is a way of being and a way of moving that connects you to how you feel, move how you feel, and handle challenges with ease.

Ashleigh’s Philosophy

Ashleigh shares and embodies the philosophy of Strala, hard things are easy when approached with ease. She guides students to provoke their relaxation response by moving gently and exploring right where they are.

Strala is a way of being, moving and healing created by Tara Stiles, drawing on her background in classical ballet and choreography. The science and movement of Strala is created by Mike Taylor, who studied Mind Body medicine at Harvard and complementary medicine at Oxford. Strala is influenced by Mike’s experience with eastern movement such as Tai Chi and qi gong.

Through Ashleigh’s training with Tara & Mike, her background in meditation, longtime personal yoga practice and work with transformation, the structure she brings is strength, balance, clarity and awareness. She guides a movement system that ignites freedom and gives a radiant experience.

Each class is about the individual and she encourages people to challenge themselves but never to push, which results in doing more with less effort. There is encouragement of exploration, curiosity and a fun expansive feeling.

It is about natural movement from the inside out. Every inhale lifts, opens, expands, and creates space. Every exhale moves you further along, softens, settles, and leads you into that new space. That feeling of lifting and softening, moving further along, going somewhere is exciting and energizing.

Ashleigh will often mirror the class and demo where it applies, always encouraging a breath body connection. Guiding with the breath allows the experience of feeling supported and lifted. Her use of touch is a support to the students in the class and her main priority is connecting to the people in the space and guiding the process.

Ashleigh looks to nature for movement inspiration. Nature is organized chaos. There is always movement in balance. She echoes an insight from Tara, “Trees are sturdy and grounded into the earth and don’t worry about letting their branches and leaves sway with the breeze. When people feel supported with breath body instruction they feel safe and free to explore how it feels good for them to move. There is no wrong way to explore.”

All Strala classes move slowly and continuously, guided with deep breath and easygoing movement from your middle. A moving flow is produced and designed to relax the body and mind, build awareness, and prepare you to move with ease, creating a refreshed and energized state. The stronger classes will build on strength, balance and flexibility, leaving you in a centered, invigorated state while dropping tension.

All classes welcome long-time practicers next to beginners, and everybody gets to move easily from right where they are.

Testimonials

”Although I’ve always been interested in learning more about meditation, I wasn’t so sure as to how to go about it, but was fortunate to meet Ashleigh… Ashleigh had such an amazing way of walking me through the process. It really centered me and made me realize the inner force that we all have, we just need to connect to it. It is so subtle, yet so powerful and calming at the same time as you feel the flow of your breath running in and out of you.” – Helen

”I am in no means an expert at mindful meditation however Ashleigh expertly geared the meditation towards my experience level. Being able to focus on my busy mind enabled me to relax and start to recognize what was going on with my body. That kind of mindfulness allowed me to return to work with a renewed sense of love and positive energy.” – Karamvir

”Ashleigh’s magnificent light makes practicing meditation a truly powerful experience for me. I’ve had resistance in the past, but I’m feeling more confident and clear in my mindfulness practice with every session. Life will keep life-ing, but what a joy it is to retreat to a safe and calm, quiet space in the mind and body, connecting every time like it’s the first… To finish, feeling a renewed sense of energy and love shining outward, truly building from within. Now THAT is spectacular.” – Desiree

My life has been like that of many, filled with ups and downs – perhaps more downs than ups. I basically lead a life of fear, of struggle and of hard work. I managed to do so on will power and certain convictions. When I was sixteen I started to experience extreme fears and panic attacks. I got exhausted and became depressed. It became part of my life for a long, long time. Multiple burnouts brought me down. I tried many classes and sessions, therapies, psychologists, doctors, alternative healers, coaching, retreats, medication, herbals, and gurus. All in vain.

In 2010 her life took a turn. She attended a Teacher Training Program in the Netherlands. During these classes she was allowed the opportunity to teach herself, and she has been teaching ever since. Half the year she lives and works her partner and daughter in Ibiza and the other half in Costa Rica.

I hope to prevent you from taking that long road of hardship that I took, although now I know it was needed to arrive where I am today. I want  to inspire you and create a setting with other participants and amidst beautiful nature. A setting in which you awaken and reconnect with your heart. It’s time we return to the ease and magic of simply being.”

No matter what is going on around and inside you.

The philosophy and practice shared with you during this workshop is aimed to support and inspire your inner joy and peace through meditation. The essence of the practice is training to become a neutral observer and let your mind become an ally. You’ll become the master of your life. Meditation is a state of steady focus, quiet and calm, a self-conscious state of knowing or witnessing

In this workshop Mirjam will share with you yoga philosophy concerning meditation, knowledge about thoughts and emotions, asana and breathing practice to calm down your nervous system enabling you to enter a mindful awareness and of course you’ll practice meditation. Mirjam will guide you towards an easy meditation practice to start yourself after this workshop.

The workshop is very practical and down to earth. You don’t need to have any experience in yoga or meditation. Both beginners as advanced practitioners are welcome.

Bring pen and paper if you want to make notes.

Breathing into Freedom – A Pranayama Workshop

1,5 hours Price Is $30

This workshop will relax your nervous system and free your body from stress.

The workshop is an introduction to the yogic practice op pranayama. Which offers practices and insights that are indispensable to our physical and mental wellness. Breath always has been the thread of connection, taking us from the busy mind towards our hearth, our intuition.

It’s common for pregnant women to learn about how to use the breath while in pain during labor. But who has learned to use breath to deal with physical, emotional and mental challenges and even pain? Pranayama is a specific, intentionally induced pattern of breathing in which you engage for a time to produce a desired effect on your body and mind.

Starting to integrate breath work with the yoga poses (asanas) is what will bring your yoga practice more to the spiritual nature of (hatha) yoga. Pranayama practice will also deepen your meditation practice.

In this workshop Mirjam will share with you the physics of breathing, knowledge about the breath and offers you breathing practices to release tension and other memories inside your body, the practice will calm down your nervous system. She’ll offer it in a very practical way so that you can easily integrate this in your life and/or in your yoga practice.

You don’t need to have any experience with yoga or breathe work.

Let Mirjam know before or at the beginning of the workshop if you suffer from hyperventilation, anxiety, panic attacks, and dissociation or had any psychotic experience.

Bring pen and paper if you want to make notes.

Both beginners as advanced practitioners are welcome.

Anamaya Resort, the Gluten Free Hotel

gluten free flour

When you Google “Gluten Free Hotel” many hotels pop up saying they are happy to accommodate gluten free diets, but in our research we haven’t yet found a hotel that is completely gluten free. Whether you have celiac disease, have a sensitivity or intolerance to gluten, or just choose to stay away from the inflammatory ingredient, the number of people choosing a gluten free diet is on the rise. In turn, the amount of amazing gluten free alternatives (and yummy ones at that) is also growing.

Meet Chef Jeff

Chef Jeff HortonJeffery Horton joined Anamaya almost two years ago, and has made it his mission to constantly improve upon the quality of the meals served, and the availability of organic, farm to table ingredients. His experience in Michelin star restaurants, along with his own businesses, plus his passion for new world cuisine was the perfect combination in a Head Chef to give our guests an unforgettable culinary experience.

Chef Jeff believes in the importance of sustainable practices and using local products and produce. Together with the fantastic kitchen team at Anamaya, they continue to provide our guests with a 100% gluten free, organic, and local menus daily. Before Chef Jeff joined the Anamaya team, the hotel wasn’t 100% gluten free. We were close, but after Jeff’s arrival he insisted that going 100% gluten free would be easier then we thought – and he was right. The morning bread he serves is a favorite among our guests. Even for those who don’t follow a gluten free diet, they love all of the meals we serve and don’t feel they’re missing out.

How We Do It

We source all our non refined, bleached or deodorized national Costa Rican gluten free flour. When it comes to gluten free baking it is important to have a mixture of flours so you get a better texture. If you use just tapioca flour you will have a very sticky outcome.

A great bonus about gluten free baking is that the nutritional value is a lot higher in vitamins & minerals than baking with wheat.

There is a large variety of gluten free flours to choose from, but at Anamaya we use sweet potato, green plantain, rice, tapioca flour (yucca flour), amaranth flour, coffee flour made from the fruit shell (so there is no coffee flavor), coconut flour, chia flour, flaxseed flour, arrow root flour and oat flour. With the oat flour we grind our own rolled oats. Oats have a protein similar to gluten (avenin) which only a few celiacs (1 in 12) will react to, and the protein is a great retainer of moisture. If we have a guest who is celiac than of course we abstain from using it.

When baking with gluten free flour it’s important to have a binding agent! At Anamaya we use flaxseed, chia, and arrowroot.

For an egg substitute we use 1 tbsp of ground flax seed plus 2 tbsp of water and let it sit for a few minutes.

Anamaya Yucca Pizza

Dairy Free

A few months ago Anamaya also made some shifts to go Dairy Free to continue to find the right balance in our food. We do store local and organic unsalted butter, cream cheese, plus goat & buffalo cheese in our fridge for our guests who’d like a little dairy added to their meals. As you can see on the Yucca Pizza above, our guests can add those cheeses to their pizza or salads, or butter to their gluten free bread if desired. However, in all of our recipes we have completely eliminated all dairy.

When it comes to fat in gluten free baking, fat is essential to having moist breads or muffins. We use a virgin coconut oil. Grape seed oil is another great option for baking because it’s neutral in flavor. Any fat can be used but at Anamaya our rule is we only use oils from seeds or fruit – never vegetable oils.

Our aim is to keep all our guests happy regardless of their diet intolerances or allergies. At Anamaya we strive for organic & sustainable food, so for us we serve our guests a gluten & dairy free, whole foods gourmet menu.

Guest Yoga Teacher Angela Plaquin

angela plaquinAngela Plaquin hails from Alberta, Canada. Always involved in athletic pursuits, she grew up a jock. Using her body through sport was a form of self-expression. This love of movement combined with the desire to be in a helping profession led her to pursue a career in Physical Therapy.  Soon thereafter, she became a certified fitness instructor. Her first taste of Yoga was in 2001. It became for her, the perfect mix between strength and flexibility. It was that thing that could be tailored to any person regardless of age or physical ability. She began teaching yoga in 2004, and soon recognized it to be her source of calm, balance and grounding energy.  She is a 200hr RYT as well as Level II RYT Yin certified. Over the years she has attended hundreds of hours of courses workshop and conferences in the field of rehabilitation and with well-known teachers from a wide variety of yoga styles.  As co-owner of a thriving yoga studio in Cold Lake Alberta, she teaches Power Flow, Vinyasa Flow, Physi-Yoga, and Yin.

In her continued pursuit for learning, she has furthered her physical therapy professional scope by becoming certified in Level II AFCI acupuncture and spinal manipulation. She often works often in the field of Woman’s Health. Her approach to rehabilitation and to yoga is largely based on functional anatomy; looking at the interaction of whole systems.

Ang’s combined skill set gives her a great advantage as a yoga teacher.  Knowing and understanding anatomy and pathology, gives her a keen eye for alignment, to see subtleties in her students as well as the ability to modify to any level or physical ability. She recognizes that having a knowing of body movement through her own yoga practice helps her to be a better physical therapist, and in turn a better yoga teacher. She values that teaching allows her to express herself and share with others a physical journey on the mat and endeavor to also guide and increase awareness of how this practice goes deeper.

Angela’s Philosophy

Angela believes that yoga should be fun. While you breathe and bend to creative and thoughtful playlists, she loves to make you smile, and find ease within. She enjoys challenging herself and the participant, in a safe and enlightening way. During the week at Anamaya, each class will be developed using the principles of the functional anatomical lines of the body and meridian theory…helping to balance your energies. She will be leading you through dynamic, fun, flowing, morning YANG sequences, as well as deepening, restorative Yin sequences. Her physio brain is angela-class-anamayanever far away and as she leads you through a sequence, she will teach you a little more about your body. Such as, What is dural tension? Why does shoulder pain affect standing balance? Why is big toe mobility important in preventing back pain? She loves to see the “aha”moments in the students faces when they are able to feel the difference a deeper understanding of the body can give their practice. She uses metaphor, analogy and imagery to help spark this physical awareness that then leads a person to seek deeper understanding, and connection to the whole.  The goal of the week is to impart to you some basic tools that serve to help you assess yourself from the inside out.

Ang is known for her energy, positivity, the ability to talk to anyone and for engaging and connecting with her clients.  She is skilled at creating an environment that allows those around her feel safe to further explore, their body, heart and spirit. She is someone from whom friends seek advice, mediation and conflict management. She calls herself a Universalist, believing that we are all connected, and that our similarities are greater than our differences. She greatly looks forward to sharing a week at Anamaya to help deepen your self-awareness, to make the physical, emotional, and energetic connections that a yoga practice can provide.

What Our Guests are Saying About Watsu

“Just came back from Montezuma, Costa Rica after spending a week at Anamaya Yoga Retreat; Ana works there, but also does the Watsu Therapy. In had never heard of this until I went here, so I was open with no expectations. I’m so glad I was open to this experience as this was a life changing one! Ana took me to the tide pools of the Pacific Ocean early morning. She led me through what can be explained as floating and movement in the water. I felt such joy, love, kindness, acceptance, and mourning; all things I didn’t know would happen. Ana is loving, safe, and connected; her energy is positive. Take a look at her video on Facebook, and if in Montezuma, book a treatment with her. Your life will be changed forever.” – Kris, Visited August 2016

“Ana is a Healer by heart and energy. I have met her years ago as i stayed at Anamaya Resort and started my journey as Yoga Retreat leader about 8 years ago. Ana’s love and passion for the art of waste has made her an incredible practitioner and anyone whom I have referred to get a Watsu session with her wasn’t disappointed and quite the contrary, was Inspired and empowered through a deep sense of nurturing, flow and lightness. I not only recommend a session with her, but most especially urge anyone interested in self-love, Self-healing and self-awareness to flow with Ana in the warms waters of The pacific protected by the Powerful and Blessed energies of Yemanja through Ana’s hands and abilities. Namaste my dear Water Goddess and thank YOU for practicing your gifts!!!” – Cristiane, Visited August 2016

“I never knew what Watsu was until Anamaya and can best describe it as a trauma releasing therapy done in the calming waters. Ana was INCREDIBLE, so nurturing understanding and kind. The time I spent in the water was unlike any other experience and I truly felt healed and prepared for whatever the Universe had in store for me when my session was over. After my watsu treatment, I needed to spend more time with Ana and so a few days later I continued treatment with a massage and reiki session. This was also a wonderful experience. I’ve had dozens of massages prior to but never expiramented with reiki. I am forever grateful for my time at Anamaya and for all of the wonder people I met. I would reccommend watsu massage or reiki for anyone looking to be healed!” – Lindsay, Visited March 2016

Guest Yoga Teachers Natasja Payne & Sandi Grekoff-Hunt

Natasja Payne, 200 E-RYT, 500 RYT Ayurveda, FIS

NatasjaNatasja Payne, a Dutch native, lives and operates a busy yoga studio in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. Natasja’s background is in dance, and attended the renowned modern dance school, CodArts in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and enjoyed many years of an active dance career. After the birth of her first child in 1998 she began her career in fitness and taught group exercise classes, group trainings and one-on-one trainings for GoodLife Fitness where in 2007 she was awarded “Fitness Instructor of the Year” for Canada. In 2008 when her mother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer, Natasja felt the pull and need to expand her own yoga practice and to create a sacred space where like minded individuals could gather and enjoy the practice of yoga in a serene, calm and spiritual environment.

teaching anamaya NatasjaToday she operates Fusionmovement Yoga Studio, boasting two spacious practice rooms, 14 yoga teachers, and over 45 drop-in classes a week. Natasja is an active teacher at the studio as well as in her community. She often is invited to teach at local high schools, elementary schools, businesses and community events.

Natasja has been teaching yoga for over 15 years, has led International yoga retreats in Costa Rica, as well been a presenter at the International Toronto Yoga Conference and at the World Fitness Expo in Toronto. She is well known for her creative, fluid, and dynamic yoga classes where she interweaves pearls of wisdom to create that “magic” in her classes. She is currently studying to become and Ayurvedic health consultant practitioner with the school of Kripalu, and is very excited to share this ancient art of healing that can bring one back into ultimate balance and vibrant health.

Natasja is grateful for her teachers; Seane Corne, Coral Brown, Rod Stryker, Maria Garre and Shiva Rea. She is excited to be able to share her passion, love and joy of the yoga practice with you in hopes that it may bring transformation, healing and intrinsic joy.

Natasja’s Teaching Philosophy

Natasja believes that yoga is for everyone and for everybody! Her classes are inclusive and she has the amazing ability to teach the same class at multiple levels, therefor every person in her classes feel safe, successful, and balanced in body, mind and spirit. The morning vinyasa yoga classes begin with a grounding movement meditation and breathing (pranayama) practices, allowing the student to fully drop-in and be present on the mat. Each class will have a different theme and/or peak pose. Classes are sequenced with great creative intelligence, so that the body and mind are completely prepared to move into the peak pose. Hands-on-enhancements are provided throughout the class allowing the student to experience a deeper embodiment of the pose. Each class ends with a 10 minute shavasana and/or meditation. Natasja’s unique touch is that she leaves you an oracle card at the top of your mat with a message that is just for you.

hanumanasanaThe late afternoon yoga classes are very gentle and restorative in nature. Essential oils and therapeutic touch are used, creating a magical and nourishing experience for the student. These classes incorporate breathing (pranayama) practices, mudras (sacred hand gestures), and/or myofascial release techniques.

All of Natasja’s classes are accompanied with music. Music is a very important component in Natasja’s classes and her playlists are created with great care to ensure that they match the experience of the class. Music is like adding spice to food, therefor creating a richer and deeper experience of the yoga practice.

Sandi Grekoff-Hunt, 200-RYT, Nutritionist, MSc

SandiSandi found her way into her first yoga class 20 years ago, around the time she began her career as a Holistic Nutritionist. She was an avid gym-goer, so yoga seemed like the perfect complement to her fitness regimen.

Over the next few years, however, as life became more hectic and stressful with a young growing family, physical injuries, and anxiety, Sandi realized she needed to focus on a form of movement that integrated all parts of her being. Yoga didn’t just strengthen and stretch her body, it fed her soul!

Life’s struggles offer the gift of transformation. During this period of transition, Sandi’s fate was sealed with a deep desire to share her love of yoga with others. She considers it a sincere and humble privilege to guide students through their practice and feels truly fortunate to be part of their journey. She strives to lead with an open heart, creating a safe, sacred space for her students to practice.

Sandi received her formal yoga training with Susie Dias at East to West in Toronto, and with her mentors, Natasja Payne and Kate O’Connor at Fusionmovement Studio in Cambridge, where she has practiced since 2009.

Sandi’s personal passion lies in the challenging, transformative practice of Power Flow Yoga, but she also loves teaching many styles of yoga including Gentle, Restorative and Yin.

Sandi’s Teaching Philosophy

Finding balance can be difficult in our lives today. As a Yoga Teacher, Nutritionist, and mother of 4 beautiful, busy daughters, Sandi’s life is full of paradox. It’s amazing, stressful, organized, messy, calm, chaotic, and sometimes quite un-Zenlike. It’s not perfect, but it’s real. She feels that yoga can bridge the gap between the reality of our busy lives, and the peace and happiness that we all seek.

Sandis Inverted PoseSandi teaches in a very down-to-earth style, because that’s who she is. Her approach is more grounded, less airy-fairy. When you roll your mat out in her class, you feel welcomed and comfortable whether you are a seasoned yogi or a beginner. She teaches safe alignment and intelligent sequencing throughout her powerful Vinyasa classes, encouraging each student to honour themselves and find their own edge. Sandi has experienced firsthand the power of yoga and has witnessed that it’s at this edge where transformation occurs.

She believes the true purpose of even the most challenging asana is to practice mindfulness – to focus on the breath, to be truly present, to create space in the body and the mind.

“Yoga can offer us many gifts. The gift of physical strength, endurance and flexibility, of course. But also the gift of inner-strength, faith in oneself, mindfulness. The real goal of yoga, I believe, is when we are able to take these moments that we collect on our mat and weave them through the fabric of our everyday and very real lives. That, to me, is the ultimate gift of yoga.”

Workshops Offered by Natasja

Introduction to Ayurveda, 2 hours

How to optimize your own health & well-being, Ayurveda is the oldest healing modality in the world and is the sister science of yoga. In recent years, more and more physicians are taking notice as the science of Ayurveda is able to give one a deeper understanding of where disease originates in the body. Many doctors are beginning to realize that the “bandaid” solution is no longer working for their patients, they are tired of giving patients medications to curb the side effects of the medication they prescribed to treat their condition in the first place. Ayurveda is a system that understands that the mind and the body are inextricably connected, nothing is more powerful than the mind. The mind has the ability to transform and heal the body. In this workshops we will look at the mind and how they are influenced by the three Gunas of Satva, Rajas and Tamas. You will be given tools to optimize Satva in your life, you will also learn what your constitution (dosha) is and what it is you can do to optimize your constitution by making small changes to your diet and lifestyle.

The workshop will be concluded with a meditation that balances all constitutions of Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Cost: $35

Introduction to Vedic Astrology, 2.5 hours

In this workshop you will learn the basic concepts of a Vedic Astrology chart, the blueprint of your soul. Your chart is a unique blue print of who you are and the gifts you were born with. At the time of your birth the planets were positioned in specific houses, signs and nakshatras. Every second and minute small changes occur in the placements of these planets, therefor there is only ONE you and no birth chart is ever duplicated. In this workshop you will gain a deeper understanding of each astrological sign, the 12 houses and what they signify, the 7 planets and the nakshatras of the moon. Please bring your time of birth, date of birth, and place of birth. Each student will have the opportunity to receive a unique astrological personal reading. This workshop is limited to 10 students to allow for the personal readings.

Cost: $35

***Package price for both workshops above is $50
