AERIAL DANCE WITH SEANNA SHARPE
Seanna Sharpe Sample YouTube Video
Aerial Dance builds strength, grace, and flexibility through the beauty of flight!
Classes are open level, utilizing complex layers of vocabulary to challenge intermediate and advanced aerialists and dancers while offering easy building blocks for beginners stretching their wings. Most students will begin work on Silk Cloud Swing, which is similar to a double-point silk hammock, enabling twists, swings, rolls, flips, and cocoons with equal ease.
Students will also work on Silks and either Lyra or Triangle, building knowledge of Aerial Dance like a language – through physical immersion. Sequences are constructed like sentences, with emphasis on smooth transition and creative stylization, comfortable connection and aesthetic intention.
CLOUD SWING is perhaps the most versatile and pleasurable of all circus apparatus. Seanna Sharpe specializes in both Rope and Silk Cloud Swing, integrating doubles and triples work into her choreography on various cloud configurations. “The cloud moves with you,” she says of her sweetheart, a rope named Frederick. “It’s the ease of motion that allows you dance and flight – in one long, deep, heartfelt breath.”
SILKS have gained popularity since Cirque du Soleil, going on to become perhaps the most common Nouveau Cirque Apparatus. Building layer upon layer of muscle, mechanics, and grace, Sharpe’s silk classes offer the beginner basics to build upon and the experienced artist a refined vocabulary of sequences and choreography, helping dancers and performers develop their style.
LYRA / TRIANGLE Welded from steel, the Lyra is a single-point metal hoop with strap and the triangle a metal three-bar suspended from single or triple point. Private instruction & Aerial Dance available on one – please specify interest in e-mail to thecircustentialist@gmail.com.
AERIAL DANCE emphasizes the creativity inherent in flight, helping dancers, artists, and performers find their flow as aerialists. Exercises will include moving meditations, partner work, brainstorming & choreography, and performance craft.
SEANNA SHARPE has been teaching Aerial Dance for 7 years, and has worked with a diverse palette of bodies and places. Her open-level classes smoothly integrate students of various levels, who work together through her blend of dance, yoga, and aerial acrobatics in a creative Nouveau Cirque Fusion Immersion.

Aerial silk is a beautiful dance and circus art that’s part trapeze, part dance, and part yoga. Requiring strength, balance, and fearlessness, the dancer climbs up and down a long piece of silk that’s hung from the ceiling, and uses this fabric in a variety of ways to create poses, spins, and various tricks of grace and strength.
Ana’s program uses yoga and pilates as a warmup and cool-down, with a focus on aerial silk skills for the bulk of the class.
The class is open to all levels: beginners, intermediates, and advanced. With time and practice, almost anyone can learn the basics, but beginners will get more out of the class if they have some yoga experience, rock climbing, or other skills/experience that develops hand strength and flexibility.
The workshop will have two parts, the morning session we will warming up the body(yoga warm up) and getting conditioned (with
pilates exercises ) follower by a technique class where we will learn how to climb and to do different figures. The afternoon class will be focus on using the fabric as a swing (Known as Aerial Yoga or Antigravity Yoga). Hanging in different yoga asanas, letting the gravity and support from the fabric release compression, opening joints and working flexibility in a not forceful way, allowing the body to connect and open.
For this workshop you will have a minimum level of fitness, a physical practice, ex: yoga, rock climbing, budokon, pilates will be helpful.

Ana Prada came to Anamaya for a second time, this time to do a small retreat and series of classes teaching aerial silk acrobatics, also known simply as “tela” in Spanish, which simply means “fabric”.
Ana is Colombian, but lives in Montreal, Canada, and has strong ties to Costa Rica because she has family here. One of her friends works as Cafe Organico in Montezuma, which is how she found out about Anamaya. Once she saw our place, she was very excited to have some classes and events here, so after a day class last February, in which many of the owners and staff of Anamaya participated, she decided to hold a full retreat.
She had one or two classes per day, with a variety of student skill levels. Some were total beginners, and others, such as Francesca who lives in Malpais, are teachers of silk acrobatics themselves. Everyone had lots to learn from Ana.
Her classes started out with stretching and yoga, and included some pilates exercises to warm up the shoulders. Utilizing stretchy, rubbery fabric strips that Ana brought with her, we did repetitive small rotations and flexes, which at first seemed ridiculously easy, but after doing twenty of them in multiple directions, were very effective at warming up the insides of the joints, tendons, and ligaments. Of course this was to help prevent should injuries when practicing various moves and tricks on the silk.
In addition to the silk that we have hanging in the main hall at all times at Anamaya, we set up two others on the view/yoga deck and one by the pool, so we had plenty of silk for the students, who took turns and rested between sessions.
On Friday night, we had a big party and invited the community. Local Italian DJ, Ferdinando “Mr Black” set up on the balcony overlooking the main hall, since that night the master suite was unoccupied. We had Anamaya’s usual spectacular dinner, where we set a new record by serving 26 people at once. After that, the students each performed, with Ana performing last. That was followed immediately by the fire dancing. I started with fire eating in the main hall, and led the audience outside to where we had the show in the grass. Ileana was the only one who performed in both shows. The party went until 1:30am, and we were lucky because all the guests at Anamaya were in a festive mind-set and didn’t mind.
Overall, the retreat and silk classes went very well and everyone had a great time. Ana is already planning her next retreat, and has even greater interest after people saw the photos and aerial silk retreat video from this one.
