SURFING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS

Surfing is an awesome sport and can be extremely addictive. It has truly become a way of life for many people around the world but starting out can seem a little daunting and even a little scary. Learning how to surf at Anamaya’s Surf and Yoga Retreat can become much easier with the right tools and advice. We’d like to share some tips with you in hopes that it will alleviate any trepidation and enforce that this retreat is about having an incredible life experience and a ton of fun!

Tip #1. Know that surfing is challenging so try not to get discouraged. It’s true that it can take many years to become a skilled surfer, but you will find that your “first time” experiences will have you hooked! The first time you get up on your board without immediately falling off…the first time you catch a wave without a push from your instructor…the first time you’re able to control and steer the board…it’s all thrilling and a big part of the experience.

Tip #2. Are you afraid of the ocean? Don’t worry – you’re not alone. Some of the most experienced surfers in the world had a fear of the deep blue sea when they started out. It’s a very common fear. Our advice would be to spend as much time in the ocean and in the waves as you can before your lesson (without your board). Walk into the waves and feel the ocean against your body. Begin a relationship with the sea…seriously. Start off slow, build an understanding and respect, over time you’ll deepen your partnership, and remember that a solid relationship cannot survive without quality time spent together. If you have no choice but to go on a blind date, then let your instructor know you’re feeling a bit fearful and they’ll make sure to take it slow.

Tip #3. Using a used or rented board in the beginning is key. Your instructor will come prepared with a beginners board for you to use. Don’t get excited about being the next spokesperson for Billabong and buy yourself a new board. In the begging surfboards go through a lot of abuse, so use the board the instructor brings you so you don’t need to worry about causing any damage to it. You can also rent boards in Montezuma, Mal Pais and other surfing spots when your off catching waves on your own time.

Surfing and yoga may seem to be diametrically opposed to one another. Surfing is seen as intense, thrilling, and adventurous, and yoga as tranquil, controlled, and meditative. The fact is that they complement each other very well.

Surfing is a very popular sport but with any sport certain areas of the body will be more engaged then others. An additional form of exercise, like yoga, that focuses on flexibility and strength is recommended for surfers to balance their bodies. The benefits that yoga offers surfers are quite substantial. Yoga will help to prevent injury, increase body awareness, improve concentration, and allow more agility. They are a perfect combination that offers freedom for the mind, body and spirit.

Learning to surf for the first time can also be quite frustrating at times. Yoga can help build your patience levels. Through practicing yoga during our Soul Surfer Yoga Retreat you will learn the art of breathing properly and reap the benefits of meditation. Both will help minimize tension, improve focus, and maximize oxygen intake, which will boost your energy. Falling off the board or missing a wave is a big part of leaning how to surf, but if you can stay calm and focused then you’ll enjoy yourself regardless – and that’s what surfing is all about, having fun!
