7 Myths About Yoga Retreats

7 Myths About Yoga Retreats

“Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.” — The Bhagavad Gita

Yoga is an absolutely transformative practice… each and every Asana has the potential to change you in ways you may never imagine. But a yoga retreat is an experience all in itself, and there are very few words to describe the way spending a week surrounded by lush forest, breathtaking ocean views and a supportive group of like-minded friends can change you.

Unfortunately, there are a few people who don’t join in this metamorphic experience because of myths surrounding attending a yoga retreat.

Here are a few myths (that you may have thought of as well, so be sure to read on) that surround attending a yoga retreat.

1. Yoga Retreats are for yoga experts only

One of the most common misconceptions about yoga retreats? That they are for yoga experts only. While the photos on Instagram may look like everyone has been practicing since they could walk, most people who attend yoga retreats have actually never been to one, and are more often than not brand new to yoga. Over the years, family members join our retreats that have never even set foot on a mat before taking the step to join us for a transformation of self and soul.

2. They are wildly expensive

Another upsetting misconception is that retreats have to be wildly expensive. That is simply not true, especially when you consider the cost of a traditional vacation. Where else in the world could you enjoy 7 days of luxury accommodations, ocean views, 3 organic and gourmet meals (and 2 snacks) and 3 hours of yoga a day for less than $1000?

3. Participants undergo deprivation and suffering

A much older misconception derived from a very specific form of yoga practice created this misconception. Yoga is in fact NOT painful, and while there was at one time a very strict training available to people who wanted to partake in it, it is NOT how yoga retreats now are. In fact? Most of our retreats are fun and spent laughing, shifting and learning to enjoy your practice again.

4. Everyone must be serious

Another common misconception, this is simply not true. Most of our retreats are filled with laughter, joy and a great time. In fact, most retreat families stay connected and host reunions after chatting, enjoying good food and wine and supporting one another throughout the week spent at Anamaya.

5. A strict diet must be adhered to

Yoga and a healthy diet go hand in hand. So while we do offer organic, mostly plant-based food that is grown at our nearby farm, we do include chicken and fish options, cater to almost any dietary restrictions and offer tons of variation for different palettes. We can also be found eating chocolate and drinking wine at the end of a beautiful day and laughing into the wee hours of the night with newfound friends.

6. You practice for 24 hours

If yoga for 24 hours is your dream, we have decks open to practice as long as you’d like. 😉 But most retreats won’t be anything like that! In fact, most of the guests that visit Anamaya choose packages that have them doing other activities such as surfing, scuba diving or ziplining for many more hours than they actually attend yoga. It is common for you to practice yoga from 2-5 hours a day, but at most retreats, this is a choice, not a commitment.

7. You can’t attend alone

If you had a chat with our founder, she would recommend you DO go alone. Attending a yoga retreat that is supportive gives you the space to be completely alone and go through a transformative experience while never once feeling alone. It is space without loneliness and the perfect space to explore yourself, recover from a traumatic experience or re-center and reconnect yourself.

Attending a yoga retreat can be an absolutely cathartic experience that changes your perspective, creates a powerful change for you or just re-invigorates your practice in a new way – but no matter what myth or fear is keeping you from attending – don’t let it get in the way of this experience.

But don’t listen to us, hear it from a few of our newest family members.

Center Yourself Before Work

Center Yourself Before Work

“65% of workers said that workplace stress had caused difficulties and more than 10 percent described these as having major effects on their health. 1.

As humans, we are more stressed than ever before.

Life is super busy, and it seems to only be getting busier.

Unfortunately with the stress can come additional health and mindset struggles.

One of the most stressful things we face in daily life? Work.

To take on the day strong, it is important to face it as clear-headed and grounded as possible.

Taking the time to center yourself in your yoga or meditation practice, or even in work situations can help restore balance back to your body and mind when stress, anxiety, frustration, anger, or other negative emotions encroach on your life.

Use these yoga poses to center you in a short session before work:

Mountain Pose (Tadasana)

Pronunciation: tah-DAHS-uh-nuh
Pose Type: Standing Pose

Every yogi knows that while it looks like you’re just standing in place, Mountain Pose is actually a very active pose involving a great deal of muscle awareness and attention. Tadasana, when correctly executed, works every muscle in the body and when practiced regularly, it can help reduce back pain while strengthening the thighs, knees, ankles, abdomen, and buttocks.

Mountain pose is contained within many sequences, but it is also used at the beginning and end of a yoga practice to ground. Many yogis include this asana as a moment of rest during their practice because it improves focus and concentration. Focus on the stilling effect achieved in Tadasana and you may discover that you begin the next sequence with a greater sense of relaxation and attention.

POSE SEQUENCE

This pose is an active standing pose done with your feet firmly grounded on the mat:

  1. Start by placing your feet hip-width apart with your heels turned slightly outward to let your weight rest on your toes.
  2. Your arms can hang down by your sides with palms facing forward or rest in prayer position.
  3. Move your pelvis away from your lower back by drawing your ribs in.
  4. Relax the shoulders and steady your breathing.
  5. Pull downward through your heels and lift the top of your thighs up and back to engage the quadriceps (the front thigh muscles).
  6. Reach the crown of your head toward the sky to make yourself long.
  7. You can gaze through the third eye or, for more challenge, close your eyes.

One of the best tips for getting this pose right is to work the pose from the ground up. Noticing and aligning the feet, then the ankles, the shins, and so forth. To find your center of balance, lean slightly forward and back several times until you find the center.

BENEFITS OF MOUNTAIN POSE

The benefits of practicing Mountain Pose include:

  • Bringing calm focus to the yogi mind
  • Relieves stress
  • Improves concentration

You can practice Mountain Pose many times during a normal day: while standing in line, in an elevator, or brushing your teeth. Once you’ve got the alignment down, you may find yourself standing and sitting straighter and taller throughout the day with less back pain and clear, calm mind.

Warrior I (Virabhradrasana I)

Pronunciation: veer-ah-bah-DRAHS-anna
Pose Type: Standing Pose

The meaning of Warrior I, or Virabhadrasana, is fierce warrior. The pose is an incarnation of Shiva, the Hindu god said to have a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, and a thousand feet. Shiva wields a thousand clubs and wears a tiger’s skin, so this is not a yoga pose for the timid and if you happen to be feeling timid today, this pose can make a big difference in your day.

Warrior I is often a part of the Sun Salutation series of poses and other sequences. It is one of the most graceful and powerful yoga postures, adding beauty and grace to the yoga practice while building heat and strength for the practitioner.

POSE SEQUENCE

You can come into this pose from several positions, such as rising up from Downward Dog and stepping back from Mountain pose. We’ll start from standing Mountain pose:

  1. Standing in Tadasana at the top of your mat, lightly step one foot back behind you about 3-4 feet. The forward leg will bend at a 90-degree angle (or as close as possible) and the pelvis will settle toward the floor.
  2. Turn the back foot 45-60 degrees outward and position the front foot right in alignment with the instep of the back foot.
  3. Exhale and rotate your torso to the front while raising your arms over your head toward the sky, turning the palms to face each other. Keep the hands and arms active and engaged in this pose.
  4. Square your pelvis as much as possible with the front edge of your mat.
  5. Lengthen the back, reaching for the sky strongly through the arms and lifting the rib cage away from the pelvis.

Releasing from the pose is also done several ways, depending on the sequence. You may straighten the forward knee while bring the back foot forward to arrive back in Mountain pose. You may lower the hands and torso down to the mat and lift the front foot back into plank pose.

BENEFITS OF WARRIOR I POSE (VIRABHADRASANA)

The benefits of this practicing Warrior I in your yoga practice include:

  • Strengthening and toning the arms, back and legs
  • Improving the body’s ability to balance and increasing stamina
  • Releasing the stress held in shoulders
  • Opens the front chest and torso

Warrior I is ideal for those with sedentary, or desk-bound, jobs where they are seated for long periods of time. It helps yogis experiencing cases of frozen shoulders and brings courage, grace and peace to the yogi who practices it.

EXTENDED TRIANGLE POSE (UTTHITA TRIKONASANA)

Pronunciation: oo-TEE-tah trik-cone-AHS-anna
Pose Type: Standing

Extended Triangle Pose, or Utthita Trikonasana, is a standing yoga pose that is a building block for the balance and grace required in all areas of life. It creates symmetry throughout your entire body. Triangle pose is an excellent pose for strengthening the lower body while lengthening stiff muscles. As a result, it’s the go-to pose for relieving anxiety or stress.

Ideal for people at desk jobs, Extended Triangle Pose works to stretch all major muscle groups that are affected by sedentary work. It teaches your body better balance and relaxes the least used muscles of the lower body. The pose is usually performed in two parts – one facing one direction and then the other. The pose may be part of a sequence, or asana flow, or done simply as a break. Practicing this pose on a regular basis will bring poise, strength, and equanimity to your daily routine.

POSE SEQUENCE

You can begin this pose from a number of positions, but we’ll describe it from Warrior II:

  1. Starting from Warrior II, straighten the front leg and keep the arms raised and parallel with the floor.
  2. Reach the front arm forward, hinging from the waist and engaging the thigh muscles to evenly balance your weight on both legs.
  3. Drop the front hand down onto your shin, ankle, or the floor (depending on your personal flexibility) and raise other arm high to the sky.
  4. Stack the shoulders over each other in alignment, keeping both rooted in the shoulder sockets.
  5. Turn your gaze upward and follow along your upper arm to the fingertips. Keep your face relaxed and your breath stead as you extend through the fingertips in both directions.
  6. Draw the forward thigh upwards to deepen the crease in that hip, keeping a microbend in the forward knee.

To come out of the pose, inhale and rotate the upper arm back to parallel with the floor as the body rises out of the pose. Pivot your heels to reverse the orientation to complete the other side. If you find yourself collapsing into the pose, put a block under the front hand for support.

BENEFITS OF EXTENDED TRIANGLE POSE, OR UTTHITA TRIKONASANA POSE

The benefits of this pose include:

  • Creates expansion in the shoulders and chest
  • Increases the mobility of the hip joints and neck
  • Stretches and strengthening the spine and back
  • Strengthens and tones the thigh muscles
  • Stretches calf muscles, hamstrings, and hips
  • Can help relieve back pain

Utthita Trikonasana improves your sense of position in space between the feet and ankles.

Easy Pose (Sukhasana) with Alternate Nostril Breathing (Nadi Shodhana Pranayama)

Pronunciation: Suk-ah-sana
Pose Type: Seated

Easy Pose may look easy, but for many people it simply isn’t. The Sukhasana pose shows us how accustomed we’ve become to sitting in chairs and sinking back into them. Our abdominal and back muscles become weak and we become prone to tight hips and lower-back pain. Approaching Easy Pose with proper support is essential for many who may need a little extra elevation to the pelvis with a folded blanket in order for the hips to open and release.

To achieve full length of the spine in Sukhasana, you must first master the balance at the core of the posture. Notice the position of your pelvis. Does it sink backward or tilt forward? Position the pelvis so that the sacrum moves in and the abdomen lifts up and inward. Once the steadiness of the pose is enabled, you can focus your attention on the upper body. Although this pose is called ‘easy’, it is intended to bring out the happy joy in the heart through real effort.

POSE SEQUENCE

This pose is often practiced at the beginning or end of a yoga flow sequence and it is an excellent way to ground the body while tapping into the joyful expression waiting in the heart:

  1. Start from a seated position with the legs crossed.
  2. Arrange the padding under your sitz bones so that your hips come above the knees.
  3. Bring one heel toward the groin and the other may rest on your lap.
  4. Root the sitz bones down into the earth allowing your spine to rise out of the pelvic area.
  5. Position the shoulders over the hips and slide the shoulder blades down your back to open the chest.
  6. Place your hands on your lap or on your knees with the palms facing up in an open and receiving position. Prayer position is also fine.
  7. Keep the crown of the head rising toward the ceiling. Keep the back long and not rounded.

Releasing from the pose is done by allowing the back to round as the legs are uncrossed. If you sit in this position for a long time, remember to switch the legs.

BENEFITS OF EASY POSE

The benefits of this pose include:

  • Calms the mind and relieves stress
  • Builds strength in the back muscles
  • Opens the hips

Sukhasana looks simple but when practiced with clear intention is has the power to draw the yogi deep inside, leading them toward a meditative state and revealing the immense joy in the heart.

Tree Pose (Vrksasana)

Pronunciation: vrik-SHAHS-anna
Pose Type: Standing, Balance Pose

If you have ever slipped in the mud or tripped over a rock, you know the value of a good sense of balance. Tree pose, or Vrksasana, is a standing balance pose that strengthens the legs, calms, the mind, and improves stability and balance. Practicing balancing poses like Tree Pose helps you gain physical and mental steadiness and poise. The calming and meditative benefits of standing in tree pose teaches that while your body may sway – like a tree in the wind – it can be steadied with the mind and muscles, so you stay calm no matter what the outside circumstances may be.

If you cannot bring the raised foot high into the other thigh, place it lower on the leg but avoid placing it directly on the knee as this causes strain. Take your time with the pose. As with any balancing pose, it’s easier to come into it slowly and with awarenessss. If you enter it too quickly you are more likely to lose your balance which makes it difficult to regain once its lost.

POSE SEQUENCE

This yoga pose is typically accessed from Mountain Pose, or Tadasana:

  1. Starting in a standing position, shift the weight of your body slightly into one foot, while lifting the other firmly slightly off the floor.
  2. Lift the opposite foot and bend the knee, placing the sole of the foot against the grounded inner thigh, tucking it into the groin (if you can) and pointing the toes down the leg. If necessary, reach down with your hand and clasp the ankle to pull it upward.
  3. The center of your pelvis should remain directly over the grounded foot in a neutral position.
  4. Rest your hands on your waist for a moment to ensure the pelvis is stable, then lengthen your tailbone toward the floor pressing the raised leg gently against the inner thigh and the thigh against the foot to create resistance.
  5. Once established, you can raise your arms overhead and gaze softly before you at a fixed point or up toward the sky depending on your balance. A partner can help with the reaching balance.

Releasing from the pose is done by stepping back into Tadasana on the exhale. Repeat the same pose on the other side. As you practice this pose, you feel rooted and balanced like a tree that has stood the test of time through all forms of weather.

BENEFITS OF TREE POSE, VRKSASANA

The benefits of this pose include:

  • Strengthening the thighs, calves, ankles and spine
  • Stretching the inner groin and thighs
  • Opening the chest and shoulders
  • Strong sense of balance

Tree pose is a gentle reminder that you can bring calm focus and clear headedness to every situation, not just when you are in a standing meditation.

Do you like to center yourself before you start your day? Want a week of relaxation to ground yourself before the busiest time of year? We’d love to have you at Anamaya.

Top 10 Reasons to Visit Costa Rica

Top 10 Reasons to Visit Costa Rica

Have you ever thought about visiting Costa Rica? You may have seen stunning photos, heard amazing stories or even checked out a few blogs…

But what are the Top 10 Reasons to Visit Costa Rica?

Disclaimer: There are way more than 10 that we can mention, but here are a few of our favorites. 😉

1. It’s the world’s happiest country.

Did you know Costa Rica was voted the world’s HAPPIEST country? Some say it is because of our “Pura Vida” way of life, others say it is because we have no army, but we’re partial to the beautiful views and slower pace of life.

2. They have a wildly high life expectancy

At age 60, Costa Rican men have an average life expectancy of 22 years, slightly higher than that in western Europe or the United States, even though Costa Rica is a developing country where health care spending per person is only a fraction of that in the United States.

Experts believe that Costa Ricans’ longevity is also due to diet. Traditional dishes rely on the “Mesoamerican Trifecta,” a healthy combination of tortillas (corn & flour), beans and squash. Fresh produce, from leafy greens and legumes to colorful fruits, are widely available year-round and are very inexpensive, making them a staple in all Costa Rican homes. Furthermore, the local water supply tests high in minerals that promote bone strength, and the sunny weather provides with plenty of vitamin D.

Further research unearthed a “Blue Zone” – an area where people live longer (90-100 years old), and enjoy better health than in other regions – on Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula (yep! that’s where Anamaya is located). In addition to the typical Costa Rican diet, Nicoyans lead very active lifestyles. Agriculture and cattle farming are a way of life here, and most residents are physically active on a daily basis, helping keep their bodies in tip-top shape.*

3. It’s becoming carbon neutral by 2021

(AND plastic free!)

With rich with lush rainforests, stunning coastlines, and towering volcanoes, is cognizant of its incredible biodiversity and has fought to keep it pristine.

In 1994, the Costa Rican constitution was amended so that a healthy environment was a guaranteed right for all citizens. Through the use of its rivers, wind, and solar the country currently gets 99% of its energy from renewable sources. Right now the nation’s record stands at 300 consecutive days using 100% clean energy—and they’re only hoping to grow that record.**

4. We have happy catchphrases

“Pura Vida,” also known as “Pure Life.”

This Costa Rican phrase tells you pretty much everything you need to know about the Tico approach to life. It has many meanings, but they are all friendly: “great” or “fantastic,” “hello,” “nice to meet you,” “thank you,” or “you’re welcome.”

Examples:
A: “How’s it going?”
B: “Pura vida!”

A: “Let me wax your surfboard for you.”
B: “Pura vida!

5. There are tons of outdoor activities

6. SLOTHS!

HOW CUTE ARE THEY?! Not only are they cute, Costa Rica is FULL of cute, interesting animals that you won’t see at home.

7. It’s extremely biodiverse

Costa Rica hosts five per cent of the world’s biodiversity, even though it makes up just 0.03 percent of the planet. Around a quarter of the country is part of a protected forest or reserve. They’re also taking steps towards preserving this biodiversity with #3.

8. It has some of the world’s best beaches

9. The People

The people in Costa Rica are the most welcoming you’ll ever meet. Not only are they happy and relaxed, but they live in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

10. Yoga Retreats

Costa Rica boasts some of the best yoga retreats in the WORLD. Including… Anamaya Retreats. Guest Yoga Teacher Bridget Fujioka

Bridget Fujioka (E-RYT 200, YACEP) was first introduced to yoga in 2001 after several tragedies in her life. Through yoga she found a calm aspect of life never before experienced. After that first year she knew becoming a yoga teacher would be life changing. To have a place where others could also use as a sanctuary would bring joy to her life. It took some time and several detours, but everything has fallen into place. She received her 200-hour teacher training from Bright Spirit Teacher Training in Hoboken, NJ in 2011 with Liza Bertini, Jillian Pransky, Carrie Parker-Gastelu, and Tam Terry.  Shortly after graduating, she became an owner of the first yoga studio in Jersey City Heights, Beloved World Yoga(formerly Yoga in the Heights). She has extensively studied Restorative Yoga at Yoga Works with Jillian Pransky, Yin Yoga with Lola Rephann, and Yoga for Backcare with Allison West. When not running the studio and teaching, she spends her leisure time with her family playing with her two boys and exploring the world. She is so grateful for the opportunity to share yoga with her community and now the rest of the world at Anamaya Resort.

Teaching Philosophy

Bridget encourages students to cultivate awareness in their yoga practice and daily lives. She believes that although the practice of yoga may not be easy, it is very simple in its overall concept. As illustrated by Yoga Sutra 1.1 “atha yoga anushasanam”, which translates as “now, the inquiry of yoga begins,” Bridget guides her students to practice mindfulness, to inquire and reflect on their experiences and to do so in a way that is kind and gentle. Bridget’s goal in teaching a yoga class is not a fancy pose, although she can help you get there, but rather that her students find a kindness and love of themselves. She believes thru this inquiry of the inner world, it will positively reflect and improve upon relationships and interaction in the outer world.  Bridget teaches breath and alignment based Vinyasa, and has a special knack for teaching beginners. She also specialized in stress reduction techniques through Restorative Yoga and Yoga Nidra. She infuses her yoga classes with other movement modalities she has studied over the years that have furthered her practice, such as the Feldenkrais Method, Egoscue Method, and functional movement. She wishes that all of her students leave class feeling restored and empowered in their daily lives.

Yoga for Stress Relief

Life can be a bit stressful…

In one of our most recent posts, we spoke about how yoga can improve your mindset in numerous ways. (Check that post out here)

But did you know that one of the key benefits of yoga is stress relief?

There are so many things that inundate our day to day life… juggling our responsibilities and pushing forward as fast as we possibly can in the race that is modern life. When it all gets to be too much, or you get to be a little too stressed, turn to yoga.

Not only does it refine your practice of turning your mind off, but it also helps you to center yourself, have a few moments of pure peace and solidify your intentions for the day.

Here are a few poses to practice when you need a bit of stress relief…

Click the title of each pose for a quick instructional on them and the benefits of each.

Easy Pose

Easy Pose with a Twist

After completing the easy pose, take the next step to twist over to the right side, bringing your left hand to the right knee and your right fingertips to the floor behind you. Be sure to life through the top of the head, keeping the spine tall.

Downward Facing Dog

From the easy pose position, move to your hands and knees and place the knees directly underneath the hips and the feet hip distance apart. Hands should reach out in front of the shoulder with the fingers spread wide and the palms fully pressing into the floor. Lifting the knees off of the floor, reach the tailbone up towards the ceiling and straighten into the legs. Press the heels towards the floor and look up at the belly button, relaxing the tops of the shoulders

Triangle Pose

Engage your right thigh muscles and draw your right femur into its socket. Extend your right hand toward the front, keeping your right hip tucked. Lower your right hand down onto your shin or ankle. The left shoulder stacks on top of the right one as you open your chest, reaching your left fingertips toward the ceiling while keeping your left shoulder rooted in its socket. Turn your head to look up toward your left fingertips. Repeat the pose with your left leg forward.

Bridge Pose

Lying on your back, bend the knees and place the feet on the floor, about hip distance apart. Place the hands palms down on both sides of the hips. On an exhale, lift the hips and butt up towards the ceiling. Keep the thighs parallel to the floor.

Savasana

This is the ending pose of a yoga practice. It’s important in this pose to ensure that the body is in a neutral position, so you may use blankets or folded towels wherever there is pressure or the need for support. Typically, under the knees and neck and sometimes under the lower back.

  1. Starting from a lying position, face up on your mat, arrange the supports you need to get your body into a neutral state.
  2. Slowly raise one leg, extend it and then allow it to lower gently to the floor. This ensures that the legs are long.
  3. Relax the legs completely, allowing the feet to fall outward away from the center of the body.
  4. Relax the groin and pelvic area and soften the lower back into the mat or a support.
  5. Reach the arms toward the sky and extend them, then allow them to gently lower to the floor as well. Turn the palms face up in an open and receiving position.
  6. Make sure the shoulder blades are resting evenly on the floor and spread the collarbones.
  7. Soften the tongue, the face and nose, and the ears to give a full release to the face.

Stay in this pose for 5 minutes for every 30 minutes of your yoga practice. To exit out of the pose, deepen the breath and roll gently over onto one side. Take a few long deep breaths and use the hands to push the torso up, dragging the head after.

From a recent guest… see more reviews on TripAdvisor

“The photos do it no justice. Everywhere you look is just beyond beautiful. Doing yoga on the yoga deck hearing howler monkeys, looking out at the ocean and the mountains was something I’ll never forget. We stayed in the Bali Cabina and that has by far been the absolute most amazing place I’ve ever stayed. The outdoor bathroom with an ocean view (and a giant bath tub) was so awesome. The pool is so great and the food was super amazing! We even went fishing and chef Jeff made a variety of stuff with the fish we caught for everyone to share. It was great! They had salsa dancing and a cooking class too amongst other things. We did a few day long tours though and it was all great. The staff set those up for us and handled everything. Laura was incredibly helpful and so sweet. I cant say enough good things about our stay. I came here after 4 years of traumatic life changing experiences and this was everything I needed to reset and take a breath and move forward. So magical. You really make a lot of new friends and I loved us all sitting by the pool at night sharing wine and stories. Downtown montezuma is super close so we walked down and the breweries, beach, and bars are a lot of fun. Just a really great spot.”

Guest Yoga Teacher Joan Radford

Joan discovered yoga more than 20 years ago as an athlete and a professional in the fitness industry. As an athlete, marathon runner and triathlete, she was always looking for complimentary workout options that supported her athletic activities. As a fitness professional, trainer, leader and consultant, she was also looking for activity options that invited clients and student to participate, be challenged yet feel accepted, capable and successful. Her initial goal was to seek out physical workouts and her introduction to yoga began with Power Yoga. She discovered quickly that her Yoga practice presented opportunities and benefits that exceeded the physical experience. After several years of her own yoga practice, she discovered that she was enjoying the benefit of practicing the commitment of movement and breath, the connection of the mind and the body and still realizing the physical benefits of enhanced strength, flexibility and postural alignment. She realized the results were on going and continued to grow with her practice. This realization led her to accept the challenge of Yoga Teacher Training. Both personally and professionally, she knew that she would benefit from the enhanced knowledge and experience provided in a training environment.

Her Yoga teacher training began in Toronto, Ontario with the Level 1 and 2 certifications in “Fast Track Training “offered at Maureen Rae’s Yoga Studio. Maureen’s authenticity and sincerity in her approach to supporting and inspiring new yoga teachers with a foundation in tradition, spirituality, sound biomechanics and safety and an overall acceptance of all students motivated Joan to accept the challenge of teaching Yoga. As her yoga practice continued to grow and she began teaching, Joan is very grateful for those years that followed this training as they were filled with yoga practice teaching, incredible and generous mentorship and workshops with some amazing Yoga professionals in North America.

After several visits to Anamaya and some incredible experiences with the teachers there, she decided that Anamaya would be the place to complete her next step of Yoga teacher training.  She was so grateful for the opportunity to attend the 200 hr RYT Yoga teacher training in July 2018 at Anamaya. The training was provided by Antoine Tinawi, Pamela Gooria and Michelle Carroll from Montreal’s Om West. This training provided an intense traditional Hatha Yoga training, deepening and enriching her yoga experience and her ability to share this with her students.

She is now pursuing her 500 hr RYT training in Edmonton with Michele Theoret at Empowered Yoga. She is expanding her knowledge and practice with advanced Asana and Flow, Restorative and Yin Yoga Certifications as well as Yoga for specialized and specific considerations including; Athletes, Therapy and Pain Care and Sustainability with aging.

Joan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology, a Special Education degree and a Master’s in Business Administration. She is certified and internationally certified through the Alberta Fitness Leadership Certification Association as a trainer of fitness leaders. She operates a not for profit business in Edmonton that provides health, wellness and fitness opportunities to employees in the health care environment. She also offers one on one personal fitness training, yoga training and a small group Yoga program, “Yoga with Friends”. She lives and practices in Edmonton, Alberta Canada.

She has been teaching for 5 years and is looking forward to welcoming participants, new and returning to Anamaya for a week of warm and welcoming Yoga practice.

Joan’s philosophy in guiding a yoga practice is to allow participants to practice at their own level for their own personal reasons, always feeling respected and supported. Although yoga provides a platform of common ground and community, it also acknowledges and accepts the individual’s reasons for coming to their mat.

Workshop

Guest Teacher Leanna Hamilton

Leanna discovered yoga in 2010, after an invite to what turned out to be a three-hour, heated vinyasa flow. With her foot shaking in her hand, Leanna was overwhelmed with laughter and joy. There was no turning back. Coming from a background in dance, Leanna was exhilarated by the challenge of developing both athleticism and breath-body movement. She found that as the dance world became something of the past, yoga became something of the present. She was able to express her artistry through yoga. After two years as an eager student, she decided the next natural step was to pursue her teaching certificate. Leanna trained under Tiffany Yoga (now Yoga Medicine) and received her 200-RYT in 2013. She is currently finishing her 500-RYT program with Yoga Medicine.

Leanna has found that her passion as a teacher lies in the integration of anatomical awareness, and playful, mindful movement. She strives to give each student the opportunity to learn within his or her own body, through very specific and guided cues. Leanna’s specialties are in shoulder, spine and hip dysfunction, yoga for athletes, myofascial release, Chinese Medicine and inversions. While her classes may require unique movement, multifunctional use of props and a possible inversion, or two, they are always accessible for all levels.

Leanna’s Teaching Philosophy

The beautiful thing about yoga is that it encourages us to be content within the present. The more we listen to the present moment and the more we check in within the physical and emotional state of our being, the more clarity we actually receive at the moment we are ready to receive it.” This was the comment I made below a photo that I posted on my Instagram account over a year ago. This has something that has slowly manifested its way into my life after over 9 years of practice. I believe to be self-aware is one of the most powerful tools within ourselves. I love that yoga is a place where self-awareness can be taught and encouraged. I always remind my students to come into their practice without judgement, allowing themselves to come into a space of acceptance. When we allow ourselves to set aside those overwhelming and tiring expectations, we are able to more freely come with an open heart. We no longer have to be the person we think we should be. We can come as we are. No matter where you are in your practice, beginner or advanced, true growth will come when you listen to your body. I will encourage you to set aside what you think you should do, and instead, practice in a way that makes you feel good within your own body. I will encourage you to be open to acceptance. I will encourage you to be present. I will encourage you to look within. Let’s reinvent the practice together.

What To Expect

Our practices will follow the elements of Traditional Chinese Medicine: Earth, Water, Wood, Metal and Fire. You will be experiencing both the philosophy behind each element as well as anatomical correlation within the element’s meridian lines. Both morning and evening practices will reflect the same element, however, the morning practice will be vibrant and awakening, while the evening practice will be soft and restorative.

Workshops

A New Approach to Inversions

There are probably more people wondering what the actual benefits of an inversion practice are than those who are ready to jump upside-down. The truth is, there are actually many benefits to getting inverted, including improved blood circulation, mental clarity and increased energy! There are also many levels in which that can be accomplished. I will be here to guide you into your inversion journey safely and with a playful approach. This workshop will look at armbalances, forearm balances and headstand. We will go over specific stabilizing exercises for the muscles involved and then play upside-down! This 2-hour workshop is designed for all levels and is $25.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release is a technique used to release and soften the fascia back to a healthy state in order to function properly. When the fascia is functioning properly, the body can work in a healthy way allowing for decreased chance of injury, and/or healing in areas that are already injured. You will receive two tennis balls and will learn the tools of self-myofascial release from the toes to the head. This “hurts so good” technique will leave you wanting more! This 2-hour workshop is designed for all levels and is $30.

All About Handstands

The goal of this workshop is to get you into handstand using a safe, alignment-based method. We will go over strengthening exercises, anatomy of the handstand, how to fall out of handstand, and secret tricks of the trade to get you flying. For those more advanced in your handstand practice, we will also be going over multiple approaches in handstand, including, pop-ups, kick-ups and presses. This 2-hour workshop is designed for all levels and is $25. See you on the flip-side!

The Top 5 Ways Yoga Can Help Your Mindset

The Top 5 Ways Yoga Can Help Your Mindset:

Your soul is your best friend. Treat it with care, nurture it with growth, feed it with love.

Ashourina Yalda

Most of us know the many incredible benefits of yoga for the body. Better sleep, more energy, increased flexibility and muscle tone – but have you ever noticed how your mindset changes? How much better you feel mentally when you are consistently practicing?

Yoga is so much more than a workout or movement of the body, it affects our mental and emotional well-being. With mindset being such a key factor in the decisions you make daily, the relationships you have and the way you feel about each moment, placing a focus on your mindset is crucial.

Here are just a few ways yoga can help your mindset:

1. It moves you from the sympathetic nervous system to the parasympathetic nervous system, or from flight-or-flight to rest-and-digest.

By human nature, in many situations (especially in today’s society) we live consistently in the flight or fight state. Continuous worry, stress and living in this state can tire you, drain your body and create serious troubles with sleep, digestion and energy levels.

2. It improves your relationships.

You don’t need a partner yoga session to improve your relationship with yoga… yoga can still improve your relationships (romantic or not) because yoga helps you to create peace of mind as well as helping you to relax. …

Yoga releases endorphins and gives us the proper tools to deal with the daily frustrations and stress in life, so that we can focus on getting through them in a way that benefits, rather than hinders, our relationships.

How much better is your mindset when your relationships are thriving versus struggling?

“Only when we deepen our appreciation of ourselves, and what we have to offer, can we begin to truly appreciate and truly support and love another. When you begin a relationship with someone it is the relationship with yourself that continues to deepen as you learn to share your space with a partner.” –Ravi Singh, world-renowned yoga instructor

3. It creates discipline

In your journey with yoga, discipline will be undeniably present.

Not only is yoga a practice you must stay committed to in order to grow, you must also be disciplined and patient as you improve your craft and learn the numerous poses, styles and sequences. In addition, you will be challenged as you work towards your personal goals – your muscles might shake, your body will feel nudged outside it’s comfort zone, and you will gently and lovingly push yourself to improve your practice as you grow.

4. It improves focus

Yoga is great for so many things, but one of the most underappreciated but overwhelmingly helpful benefits of yoga is the way it helps to improve your focus. Yoga is one of the best teachers of focus. In order to be truly present and get the most out of your practice, you must close out all distractions and outside thoughts to focus on allowing your body to work the poses and feel the depth of them to get the most out of each practice.

5. It is a relaxing break – for your mind and body!

While perfecting the perfect pigeon post may feel more stressful than relaxing, in order to truly excel in your practice you have to learn to relax your mind and body.

When you relax, you release the daily stressors and any negativity and anxiety that has built up over the day… and of course it helps to quite your mind.

Next time you attend a class or practice yoga, observe how you feel at the beginning versus how you feel at the end of the practice: paying special attention to your mind and the way your mindset changes. Did you know that yoga can change your mindset?

How have you changed your mindset since beginning your yoga practices?

Guest Yoga Teacher Liz Getman

Liz Getman is a registered yoga teacher (E-RYT 200, YACEP) and retreat guide who resides in Gainesville, FL. Through yoga, mindful movement, and purposeful living, Liz supports others in cultivating love and compassion for themselves and the world around them.

Liz studied Hatha and Hridaya (spiritual heart) yoga with Arjuna Dharma Das and Arpita Kshama Devi at Mahadevi Ashram & Kaivalya Yoga School in Tzununá, Guatemala. While there, she developed Cacaoga®, a practice that unifies sacred cacao with heart-centered asana and meditation. Liz first began offering yoga and wellness retreats domestically and abroad in 2016 after recognizing the power of travel in her own life and from fellow yoga teachers, such as her dear friend and collaborator Cristiane Machado.

Outside of traveling, Liz teaches yoga and Zumba® regularly in Gainesville and serves as program director of YogaLoka, a nonprofit organization that provides yoga and meditation to traditionally underserved and marginalized populations. Liz has a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Ithaca College and a master’s degree in Latin American Studies from the University of Florida. She is the co-host of Beyond Asana, a podcast that features yoga teachers and spiritual leaders living yoga off the mat. Read Liz’s thoughts on life, spirituality, and yoga on Elephant Journal, or join her for a guided meditation on Insight Timer.

Teaching Philosophy

Liz’s teaching philosophy stems from the Yoga for All movement. Though her vinyasa-style classes are physically and mentally challenging, she creates an atmosphere in which all practitioners—no matter their yoga background—feel safe and supported. Liz teaches both flow and yin style practices that integrate yogic philosophy, mindfulness meditation, and a focus on inward experience. As her initial studies included Hridaya (spiritual heart) yoga and meditation, she often designs classes, workshops, and retreats around opening the physical and energetic heart space. Liz has also studied Bhakti yoga, or the yoga of devotion, and often weaves mantra and chanting within her teaching and musical selections. Her background in trauma-informed yoga ensures that even those who have suffered severe tragedy, mental dis-ease, and long-term suffering will feel at home and in community in her presence.

Workshops

Heart-Opening Cacaoga®

Heart-opening, gentle yoga. A warm drink of nourishing cacao. Space to settle your mind, open your heart, and connect on a deeper level. Join Liz Getman, E-RYT 200, YACEP, and creator of Cacaoga® for the bliss-facilitating power of Cacaoga®, a practice designed for all yoga and spiritual practitioners. Cost: $35 US.

This event will include a 90-minute blend of cacao ceremony, heart-centered meditation, and yin-based asana. Come prepared to experience the depth of your emotional power and to open your physical and energetic bodies to the unconditional love and compassion that reside in each one of us.

Native to tropical areas of the world, cacao is chocolate before the processing; a non-sugared, unadulterated form of one of our world’s favorite sweets. Known as a super food, cacao is high in magnesium, calcium, antioxidants, and iron, and is an incredible mood booster! One of its more potent components is anandamide, a neurotransmitter known as the bliss molecule. For those with an interest or background in yoga and/or Hindu philosophy, you may know that the word “ananda” means bliss and refers to a higher state of being. Cacao facilitates our goal of achieving that blissful state and deepening our connection to our truest selves, Mother Nature, and universal oneness. According to an indigenous myth, when the balance between humankind and nature is threatened, cacao comes from the rainforest to open our hearts and return us to harmony. Ceremonial cacao partners with us, facilitating the journey inward and the discovery of our truest, highest, most love-filled selves.

Yin & Thai Yoga

Join Liz Getman, E-RYT 200, YACEP, for a special 75-minute for a Yin & Thai Yoga class that will include hands-on assists throughout our yin-based practice. Yin yoga is a slower-paced, meditative style of yoga, suitable for all levels. Passive asanas are held for 2-5 minutes, allowing practitioners to access fascia and connective tissue while developing a deep inward practice. Hands-on, Thai yoga assists will be offered to help open the body and settle the mind throughout class. Cost: $25.

Zumba® Fitness

Join Liz Getman, Zumba® Teacher, for a 60-minute dance class for all! Zumba® is an exercise fitness program that involves dance and aerobic movements performed to hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue, and more. Prepare to sweat, shout, and laugh during this fun and energetic class designed to lift your spirits, build confidence, and connect in community! Cost: $15.

Guest Teacher Cristiane Machado

Cristiane Machado is Brasilian by Birth and a Citizen of The Universe by choice. She has moved to the USA in July 1999 where she lived until February 2019. She is now living a Pura Vida in Montezuma Costa Rica.

Cristiane has graduated from The Florida School of Massage in May 2004 and she has been practicing Massage Therapy since them, giving her 15years of hands on experience in working with the Human body.  Cristiane’s knowledge, experiences and studies of Physicalityand how it gets affected by every day living and stressors, has opened her curiosity to the  less obvious subtleties and ways that the Body communicates discomfort, pain and dis-ease.  Studying Reiki  and Johrei (energy work) since she was 13 yo, inspired the understanding of HOW Energy plays a big role in our daily lives and she loves to make that understanding accessible and demystified. Actually, Cristiane’s intention with her craft as a Body worker is to simplify and clarify the communication between our physical bodies, our minds and our emotions and HOW it all affects our daily living.

Cristiane has toured the Globe teaching Zumba Master Classes and hosting Yoga and ZUMBA Retreats. Cristiane is filled with Passion for ALL types of therapeutic movement. Either by Flowing the physical body into Asanas along the Breathe, or learning how to move the Ethereal and Energetic bodies into anecstatic and tantalizing rhythmic dance with the Self, Cristiane Believes that EVERY Body was designed to move hence her desire to combine YOGA, Breathe, Meditation and DANCE.

Her studies of Yoga started at Anamaya when she attended a 200 YTT and has deepened as she connects with profound understanding of ALL matter and the in between.

Throughout her self-loving and self-healing journey, she has learnt and cultivated sacred tools that she is dedicated to share. Cristiane uses Sacred Cacao,Mantra discipline, Breathe, Journaling (self-inquiry) and  a whole lot of having FUN while doing it.

A firm believer that our thoughts and intentions do co-create our reality, she became a Trail Blazer for Mike Dooley’s program, Infinite Possibilities and she has presented in his conferences and taught several workshops on The Art of Manifesting Your Dreams into Reality, adding practical ways to our tools box that will facilitate a reset on old thought patterns and to realign one’s life to its true purpose.

Cristiane’s cultural and eclectic upbringing has instigated in her the belief that we are ALL one, and no matter the status quo, we ALL deserve to be seen under the same light. That belief has inspired and empowered her to co-create the YogaLoka Project, a non-profit dedicated to bring YOGA, Meditation and holistic health to marginalized populations in order to transform mental illness into mental wellness. Infinite Possibilities Workshop

Have you ever imagined waking up every single day with a full heart and a big smile on your face?

Probably not as you might have been taught that life is hard, unfair, and not everybody is meant to be successful and happy… does that sound familiar? What if I were to challenge you AND those believes? What if I were to tell that actually life is grand, you are Divine, and each and every one of us has the birth right to be deeply fulfilled and happy. That is exactly what I am bringing to my Yoga Retreat at Anamaya. A new way into thought and a new way of living life.

The Infinite Possibilities Workshop is a program developed by Mike Dooley, aka The Universe dude that breaks away old patterns of thinking into a more open, deliberate and conscious way of being. We have all been conditioned into believing that there is not enough of everything for every human being, and our society became sick and competitive; creating a fear base state that only brings us down and away from our Divine selves.

I started working with the program after receiving the “Notes from The Universe” which “accidentally” started arriving in my mail box… I truly do not remember signing up for them, still, receiving those notes were the highlight of my mornings. What was it about those notes that was so special? Well, they spoke of truth. Simple messages that we are ALL meant to be happy and we CAN live fulfilled lives. That by itself resonated very deep within my gut, aka soul. I would even get emotional reading those messages and thats when I knew this guy, Mike Dooley, was up to something profound.

I read and re-read his books and sign up for a conference in New Mexico in 2016. It was ALL I expected and MORE and I became a trail blazer for the program, hosting a workshop for 12 people in 3 days after the conference. Since then, I have been using his program for my own growth and expansion, and have also supported hundreds of humans like me to lead a life with purpose, joy and a deeper understanding of how our thoughts become things and how we are manifesting the lives we are living.

The massive shifts I experienced by incorporating the program into my life were also noted by my closest friends and family. I was no longer afraid of living my deepest truths and I no longer experienced lack. I started feeling the certainty that I was here for many reasons and that one of these reasons was to be HAPPY.

Within the years of being involved in this program and receiving the notes over the last 3 years, I can say I am truthfully blissful and grateful to be ALIVE. I have co-created the life of my dreams with clarity and I no longer suffer. It doesn’t mean I don’t have any problems… it means I’ve gathered tools to navigate my life with an open heart. Even when life throws unexpected stuff my way, I can respond to it instead of re=acting.

There is JOY to be experienced and invite YOU to dive into it with me in this 6 hour workshop that is designed to challenge and shift your way of thinking. We will gather together and work the program which consists of questions in a journaling form that instigate your mind and deepens your sense of self and how our families, teachers and society can sometimes impose “their” way into our psyche.

This 6 hours workshop will be divided in 3 days throughout our retreat and it be a perfect complement for this self-care and self-healing journey you are on. You will receive printed material and we will work side by side in breaking patterns that no longer have a purpose in your growth, expansion and evolving process.

Financial investment: $125.00 working material included.
